10 of Portland’s Junior Coasters squads hit the road across Saturday and Sunday, contesting the Hamilton Basketball Association’s Junior Tournament.
Portland fielded two teams at the under-18 boys level, contesting the first and second divisions.
In division one Portland finished with two wins and three losses from five starts, placing fourth.
Portland’s two wins were one-sided victories, defeating Ararat (63-37) and Maryborough (48-17) off the back of consecutive double-digit scoring performances from Broque Field.
The winner of the division was Hamilton, defeating Warrnambool Green.
In the second under-18 boys division Portland placed fifth with one win from five starts.
That win came against Casterton in the fourth round, winning 63-14 after a 21-point outing from Riley Gallagher.
The winner of the second division was Koroit, defeating Terang in the grand final.
Under-16s
Portland’s under-16 girls team was placed in the second pool and finished on top of Maryborough, Terang and Warrnambool with three wins from three starts.
That excellent run pushed the Coasters into a semi-final clash against Hamilton on Sunday afternoon which ended in heartbreak for the team, going down 28-29.
Sienna Stone led all scorers in the semi-final with 17 points.
Hamilton had another tight win in the grand final against Warrnambool White, claiming the tournament 30-26.
• Portland fielded two under-16 boys in this year’s Hamilton Junior Tournament, split between division one and two.
Portland’s division one team missed out on a win in four starts despite strong scoring efforts from Nick Peters, Klay Nicholls and Jake Payne.
Horsham was the winner of the division one grand final, rolling Hamilton.
• In the second division Portland enjoyed slightly more success, winning one of three games contested in the second pool against Warrnambool, Pacers and Horsham.
That win came on Saturday evening against Horsham, getting over the line 56-33 after Oliver Ward and Bodhi Duncan combined for 32 points.
Maryborough defeated Horsham in the division two grand final, 48-40.
Under-14s
Portland’s under-14 girls team began the tournament in the second pool with Warrnambool, Pacers and Casterton.
The Coasters kicked things off with two crushings, the first a 69-22 defeat of Casterton and the second a 61-6 win over Pacers.
Portland’s final regular contest on Saturday came against Warrnambool Green and ended in a 42-54 loss, despite a 20-point scoring effort from Maddi-Lyse Stone.
The Coasters progressed through to a quarter final showdown with Warrnambool White on Sunday which didn’t go to plan, going down 21-25.
Hamilton Hurricanes were the eventual champions, defeating Terang by two points in the grand final.
• The Coasters fielded two teams in the under-14 boys competition and in division one missed, out on a win from four starts.
The opening round of the tournament was Portland’s tightest result – a 12-point loss to Hamilton.
Warrnambool Seahawks won the division one grand final in a blowout result against Terang.
• In the second under-14 boys division the Coaster also missed out on a win, this time from three starts.
Maryborough were the division’s winners, defeating Warrnambool Blue in the grand final on Sunday.
Under-12s
Portland’s under-12 girls team lined up against Hamilton, Warrnambool Mermaids and Warrnambool Blue across Saturday and Sunday.
Portland’s biggest highlight of the tournament was a round three victory over Warrnambool Mermaids, 25-15.
Ruby Rowe top-scored for the Coasters with six points.
The Coasters faced Warrnambool Mermaids for a second time on Sunday in the semi-finals and unfortunately for the Coasters, the Mermaids had their revenge, winning 8-18.
This ended Portland’s tournament and pushed the Mermaids into the grand final, where they were defeated by Hamilton by three points.
• Portland’s under-12 boys team was one of 11 teams to compete in this year’s Hamilton tournament.
The Coasters were placed in the first pool and won three of five regular matches.
Those wins came against Casterton (39-2), Pacers (21-20) and Koroit (29-10), with Makai Marra enjoying double-digit scoring performances in two of the three victories.
Three wins out of five wasn’t enough to qualify the Coasters for the finals, whichw as eventually taken out by Warrnambool Seahawks, rolling Hamilton in the grand final on Sunday.
