Crushing: Celtix far too good for rivals

THE spring season of the Portland Basketball Association’s Division 1 men’s basketball season has finished on a defining note, with Celtix demolishing Tigersharks Gold to the tune of 43 points on Sunday.

Celtix simply outclassed their opponents, to win 74-31, after the game was postponed until 5pm after a leak over the roof of court 2 at the Portland Basketball Stadium, where all of Sunday’s grand finals were held.

The pressure on the court started off high, and did not diminish until the final stages, with Celtix’s David Denboer starting proceedings with a 3-pointer, foreshadowing things to come.

As both sides applied pressure at both ends of the court, Celtix were able penetrate Tigershark’s Gold’s key far better than Tigersharks Gold could to Celtix, which became a regular theme of the game.

Toby Oakley collected rebounds at both ends, allowing for a quick transition to offence for Celtix, and Jackson Dunlop and Will Hunter were there at the other end to convert.

Tigersharks Gold, however, threw themselves at Celtix’s key, and broke upon the green singlets like water, with the combined might of Celtix’s defences effective at holding them off.

By half time, Tigersharks Gold had been kept to just 11 points, with Celtix ahead on 32.

Not much changed in the second half, either, with Tigersharks Gold being forced into worse and worse shooting positions by Celtix.

At the other end, Dunlop continued, and would wind up with 24 points for the game.

Will Hunter was dangerous as well, scoring 21 points.

The contrast between the two sides’ standout players was more notable than it needed to be, with Toby Jennings the most effective of Tigersharks Gold’s players with 10 points, while Trenton Johnston scored 9.

By the end of the night, Celtix were 43 points ahead, in what was a damning performance from Tigersharks.

The premiership could hardly have been decided in clearer fashion.

Tigersharks Gold were able to do better in the Division 2 grand final, defeating Tigersharks Red 70-56.

A strong team effort from Gold was key, despite a monster performance from Logan Edwards for 29 points for Tigersharks Red.

Rufus Punton scored 14 points for Gold, while Dylan Barden, Kobi Bannam and Darcy Campbell all scored 13 points each.

Mustangs Team 2 were victorious in the Division 3 men’s grand final on Sunday, defeating Tigersharks Red to the tune of 53-37.

20 points from Blake Schwarz helped them along their way, while Sam Peck scored 13, and Liam Cook scored three 3-pointers for his 9.

Dylan Barden scored 13 points for Tigersharks Red, while Jayke Cannon scored 11.

Tigersharks Red, in their third grand final of the day, were finally able to win one, this time in Division 4, 56-32 over Shawnee Blue.

Jake Tunstall was particularly destructive for Red, with 19 points, while Cameron Tunstall scored 15.

Macauly Baker was Shawnee’s best with 16 points.
