Junior teams impress during South West Classic campaign

HAMILTON sent teams to compete at the South West Classic in Portland at the weekend with the youngest basketball teams grabbing the spoils.

Under-12 Boys

HAMILTON sent an A and a B team down with the two teams facing off in the opening game with A getting the spoils, 51-14.

Beau Brian topped the scoring with 17 for the winners, while Knox Picken’s six points was the best for the B team.

The A team continued its winnings ways with a thumping 88-6 win against Portland in round two.

Jack McCulloch put up 20, while Brian added 18 for the winners.

Hamilton B had a round two bye.

Round three saw B return to the court against Casterton, collecting a 40-21 win.

Harry Button was the standout with 12 points.

Hamilton A sat out the round, courtesy of a bye.

The team came off the bye and accounted for Warrnambool Blue, 36-20, off the back another impressive showing from Brian, who added 13 points, while Zanda Ewing finished with 12.

Hamilton B faced Pacers and fell short, 22-45.

Charles Prentice put up six points for the Hurricanes.

It was semi-final team and Hamilton A faced Warrnambool Green, winning 63-36.

Brian had his best game yet with 26 points, while Oliver Winnell and McCulloch added 10 each to the tally.

Hamilton B accounted for Koroit, 34-18, thanks to Picken’s 16-point effort.

The team then progressed to the B grand final, losing to Pacers, 14-46.

Hamilton A also lost in the grand final, falling to Warrnambool Blue, 22-37.

Under-12 Girls

TWO Hamilton teams contested the section once again with Hamilton A opening its campaign with a 14-33 loss to Warrnambool Mermaids.

Emily Iredell put up eight points, while Willow Colliton was the other scorer with six.

Hamilton B faced Warrnambool Blue in round one but lost 9-23.

Tatum Bell’s four points was the standout for the Hurricanes.

Hamilton B then faced the Warrnambool Mermaids in round two and fell short, 3-58; Pippa Richards finished with two points.

Hamilton A got on the winners list when it faced Warrnambool Blue, 35-11.

Iredell continued her scoring streak with 20 points in the round two clash.

Round three saw the A team defeat Portland, 18-13, once again off the back of Iredell, who put up 12 points.

Elsie Brown chipped in with the other six points.

Hamilton B fell just short of Warrnambool Green, 18-20.

Evie Milne top-scored with six points.

Hamilton A faced Portland in its semi-final, winning 43-17.

Brown’s 21 points was the best.

The Hurricanes B team won its semi-final against Warrnambool White, 24-11.

Milne’s 14 points was the standout for the winners.

The A team faced the Mermaids once again and reversed the result from earlier in the weekend to win, 29-14, with Brown’s 13 points the highest tally.

Hamilton B won a thrilling decider against Warrnambool Green, 18-17, off the back of nine points from Milne.

Under-14 Boys

HAMILTON had two teams in action once again with the B team winning its opening match, 33-8, against Portland.

Jay Casey put up 15 points for the winners.

Hamilton A faced Casterton and won easily, 70-2, thanks to 13 points each from Charlie Baker and Riley Iredell.

The two Hamilton teams faced off in round two with A winning, 37-8.

Ned Hintum put up 10 points for the winners, while Casey, Hugh Prentice, Jono Stewart and Jessy Walter each scored two points for the B team.

Hamilton A then faced Warrnambool Green, winning 38-31, off the back of 12 points from Iredell.

The Hurricanes B team lost to Warrnambool Blue, 35-43.

Prentice did his best to get his team over the line, top-scoring with 14 points.

The team bounced back with a 62-14 round four win against Koroit.

Casey top-scored with 17 points.

The A team also had a win, defeating Pacers, 78-10.

Abdul Muhktar was the standout with 19 points.

Hamilton A had a round five bye, while the B team defeated Pacers, 30-15.

Stewart’s eight points was the Hurricanes’ best.

Hamilton A lost its semi-final to Warrnambool Green, 48-55, while the B team also went down, 35-39 against Warrnambool White.

Under-14 Girls

HAMILTON faced Warrnambool Green first up and won, 35-28, thanks to Saskia Gould’s game-high 10 points.

The team then continues its winning ways with a 79-4 victory against Pacers Purple.

Gould put up 24 points in the win, while Ruby Cleaver and Lily Raymond each contributed 10 points.

Round three was the Hurricanes’ first loss, going down to Warrnambool Mermaids, 29-38.

Gould was the standout once again with 17 points.

The team then sat out round four with a bye, before defeating Warrnambool White, 37-9.

The Hurricanes then proceeded through to the semi-final, losing to the Mermaids, 22-46.

Under-16 Boys

IT was back to two teams for the Hurricanes and the B team struggled to match Terang in round one, losing 28-74.

Karatau Keightley put up 12 points in the loss.

Hamilton A fell to Warrnambool Seahawks, 39-47, despite Daniel Spillman’s 20-point effort.

The team got on the winners list in round two against Portland, 32-29.

Spillman put up nine points, while Jack Sobey chipped in with eight.

Hamilton B went down to Warrnambool White, 20-47.

Ontaj Gould put up a team-high 11 points for the Hurricanes.

The A team continued its winning way, this time against Portland D2, 47-23.

Spillman once again topped the scoring with 17 points.

Hurricanes B went down, 25-67, against Warrnambool Blue, despite another 10-point effort from Gould.

The team also struggled in its round four clash against the Seahawks, losing 28-85.

Hamilton A accounted for Terang D2, 54-37, thanks to Zac Elliott’s 21-point haul.

The A team was the only team to progress through to the semi-finals, facing Warrnambool Blue and winning, 46-44.

Spillman’s 14 points was crucial in getting the win.

It set up a grand final clash against the Seahawks with the Warrnambool team winning, 55-42.

Under-16 Girls

HAMILTON opened its campaign against Warrnambool White with both teams locked on 23 at the final buzzer.

Maddison Cotten was the top-scorer with 10 points.

A 21-24 loss against Portland was next for the Hurricanes, despite 10 points from Avreet Kaur.

Casterton was next on the schedule and the Hurricanes won, 61-10, thanks to 15 points from Kaur and 14 from Stella Grinham.

Hamilton continued its winning streak, this time against Terang, collecting a 32-6 victory.

Cotten put up 10 points, while Grace Cleaver added eight.

A round five bye helped the Hurricanes progress straight through to the grand final, facing Portland and losing, 22-37.

Under-18

HAMILTON did not send any Under-18 Boys or Girls teams to the tournament.
