Tough outings for junior teams at Seaside Classic

HAMILTON Hurricanes continued their junior squad basketball season, competing at the Warrnambool Seaside Classic at the weekend with many teams returning to the court just a week after the Portland junior tournament.

Under-18 Boys

THE Hurricanes opened their division one campaign against Colac on Saturday morning and controlled the contest to win, 36-26, thanks to Josh Miller’s 12 points and 10 points from Deacon White.

The Seahawks awaited Hamilton next with the Hurricanes falling just short, 43-48.

It was a second loss for the Hurricanes in round three, this time to Surfcoast, 41-44, despite 16 points from White and 11 from Bailey Cooper.

A rematch against Surfcoast in the semi-final on Sunday saw Hamilton reverse the result to win, 46-30.

Miller put up a game-high 17 points, while White continued his impressive form with 14 and Bailey Baker added 11.

Hamilton progressed through to the decider and faced Warrnambool once again, but lost 11-36.

Miller was the Hurricanes’ best with six points.

Under-16 Boys

THE Hurricanes started their division 1-2 weekend with a Pool B clash against Horsham Hornets, losing 31-36.

Jack Sobey topped the Hamilton scoring with 11 points, while Zac Elliott put up 10.

The team got on the winners list in round two with a 35-17 win against Portland, as Daniel Spillman’s 12 points proved pivotal in the result.

A 52-47 win against Warrnambool Seahawks Blue boosted the team’s confidence, as Elliott shot 15 points, while Austin Mayfield found his range, putting up four maximums, while Matt Calvert also contributed 12 points.

The Hurricanes progressed through to the semi-finals, facing Warrnambool Seahawks and losing, a thriller, 25-26.

Calvert was the standout with 12 points for the Hurricanes.

Hamilton also had a team in division three, opening the weekend with a 58-16 win against Casterton.

Jack Roberts put up 16 points, while Xavier White added 10.

The Hurricanes continued their winning streak in round two, accounting for Colac, 31-26.

Tyson Sparrow and White each contributed eight points in the win.

Portland was next on the schedule with Hamilton winning, 25-17, off the back of seven points from Roberts.

The team’s first game on Sunday broke the win streak, losing to Pacers, 30-47.

Sparrow put up eight points, while Jack Khawli added six.

Another loss, this time against Warrnambool Seahawks White, 18-20, cost the team a spot in the grand final, as Roberts did his best to get Hamilton over the line with nine points.

Under-14 Boys

IT was an opening round clash against Casterton for Hamilton’s division two white campaign, winning 45-16.

Jay Casey top-scored with 14 points, while Darcy Milne added 12.

Warrnambool Seahawks White was next on the schedule for the Hurricanes with the home team too much to overcome, winning 41-28.

Hamilton bounced back immediately, smashing Portland in round three by 55 points.

Hugh Prentice shot a game-high 17 points, while Milne chipped in with 16 in the 62-7 victory.

It was a thrilling round four contest against the Kookas with the Hurricanes falling just short at the final buzzer, 33-34.

Prentice put up nine points, while Ned Cush added seven for Hamilton.

Koroit was the final game before the grand final and Hamilton easily won the match, 55-12, off the back of Casey’s 17 points, 14 from Milne and Prentice’s 10.

Despite the big margin, the team missed out on qualifying for the decider.

Under-14 Girls

HAMILTON opened its weekend against Colac Kookas, losing 13-32.

Charlize Cooper topped the Hurricanes scoring with six, while Ruby Cleaver put up five points.

It didn’t get any easier with Warrnambool Mermaids awaiting the team in round two.

The visitors struggled to match the Mermaids’ efforts, losing 18-31.

Holly Rook impressed, scoring seven points.

The Hurricanes got on the winners list in round three, edging out Bendigo Braves, 33-20.

Cleaver topped the scoring with 13, while Rook continued her strong form, putting up 11 points.

The Hurricanes progressed through to the semi-finals and faced the Kookas, reversing the result from earlier in the tournament to win, 28-21.

Cleaver and Rook continued their scoring efforts, adding 12 and eight points respectively.

The Hurricanes then faced the Mermaids in the decider, losing 7-39.

Cleaver finished with six points, while Lily Raymond also contributed to the scoreboard.

Under-12 Boys

HAMILTON got off to a winning start in its division one campaign, accounting for Colac in round one, 38-29.

Beau Brian topped the scoring with nine points, while Jack McCulloch put up eight points and Zanda Ewing added six.

A round two clash against Warrnambool Seahawks was a tougher task with the Hurricanes outplayed, losing 13-50.

Brian was once again the standout scorer for the Hurricanes, finishing with seven points.

Traralgon T-Birds awaited Hamilton in round three and it was the Gippsland-based team which got the win, 47-16.

The two teams faced off in a rematch soon after, but with higher stakes in the semi-final clash.

Traralgon tightened up its defence after the earlier game and made it two wins from as many games as Hamilton, edging out the Hurricanes, 46-20.

Brian finished with six points, while McCulloch added four points in the loss.

Hamilton opened its division two white campaign with a round one clash against Terang, winning 21-18.

Connor Crawford top-scored with 11 points, while Harry Button was the next best with four.

It was a tougher prospect in round two, as the Hurricanes faced Pacers and went down, 17-56.

Charles Prentice (six points) and Crawford (five points) were Hamilton’s top-scorers.

The challenges continues with Warrnambool Seahawks Green next on the agenda, as the Hurricanes struggled to match the home team, losing 16-40.

Prentice (eight points), Button (six points) and Baxter Walkenhorst (two points) were Hamilton’s scorers.

The Hurricanes got back on the winners list on Sunday morning with a 54-17 victory against Portland.

Crawford shot a game-high 13 points for Hamilton, while Walkenhorst (eight points), Prentice (eight points) and Knox Picken (eight points) were the main scorers.

A round five bye forced the Hurricanes to the sidelines with the team missing the grand final.

Under-12 Girls

HAMILTON opened its division one campaign with a 33-14 win against Colac Kookas.

Emily Iredell put up 12 points, while Elsie Brown added 10 in the win.

The winning streak extended to two with a 44-14 victory against Portland in round two.

Yolanda O’Sullivan impressed for the Hurricanes, top-scoring with 15 points.

Iredell contributed 11 points as well as Brown (10 points).

Warrnambool Mermaids was next for Hamilton, as the Hurricanes won, 20-13.

An immediate rematch between the two teams took place as a semi-final with Hamilton remaining undefeated with a 19-11 victory.

O’Sullivan’s 13 points was the standout performance.

Hamilton faced Colac in the decider with the final scores unavailable at time of print.

The Hurricanes also had another team entered in division two and its Pool A round one clash against Colac Kookas White saw the Hurricanes fall short, 13-18.

Tatum Bell (five points) and Evie Milne (four points) topped Hamilton’s scoring.

Warrnambool Mermaids Blue was next on the schedule for the Hurricanes, with a tough match-up resulting in a 5-42 loss.

Bell put up three points, while Pippa Richards added two points.

Mermaids Green was Hamilton’s round three opponent with Green winning, 26-13.

Bell continued her impressive form, shooting 10 points in the loss.

The Hurricanes qualified for the division three semi-final, facing Colac Kookas Green for a spot in the decider.

Hamilton fell short at the final buzzer, 7-15.

Richards top-scored with four points, while Hannah Logan added two points.
