Classic victory at Colac for junior team

HAMILTON Hurricanes’ Under-16 Girls basketball team travelled to Colac for the Colac Classic, impressing across the weekend with a perfect weekend of results.

The Hurricanes opened their weekend with a clash against Horsham Hornets on Saturday morning and easily accounted for their opponent, winning 42-16.

Avreet Kaur found her range early in the weekend, putting up a game-high 20 points for Hamilton, to get her team off to a winning start.

Warrnambool Blue was next on the schedule and the positive form continued for the locals, dominating the contest at both ends of the court to finish 32-16 winners.

Once again, it was Kaur who led from the front in offence, adding 16 points to her weekend’s total, as the Hurricanes looked to finish day one with unblemished record.

Colac Kookas were the final opponents for Saturday and it was a thrilling contest, as the home team pushed the Hurricanes harder than any other team, but eventually fell short by the narrowest of margins, 24-25, giving Hamilton a third straight victory.

Grace Cleaver stepped up when it counted, finishing with 10 points for the game, while Kaur’s eight points was also critical support.

The locals sat out round four to open Sunday’s proceedings, courtesy of a bye, and the team came out in round five refreshed and raring to go against Surfcoast.

The Hurricanes found their range, holding off their opponents to win, 28-22.

Kaur again top-scored with 11 points.

Finals awaited the Hurricanes after an undefeated weekend and Warrnambool White awaited the team in the semi-final.

Maddison Cotten and Cleaver scored seven and six points respectively to guide Hamilton to a 25-22 victory to progress through to the final.

A perfect weekend awaited the locals if they could claim victory in the grand final, but the second Horsham Hornets team awaited and was not going to be a pushover for the undefeated team.

Hamilton was forced to work hard, as Kaur dominated proceedings with 15 points to help her team to a 33-24 win.

Bridget Mailes put up eight points in support, as the team went through the weekend without a loss.
