THE Hamilton Hurricanes sent teams to the Under-14 Junior Country Championships in Traralgon with the girls team crowned division two champions.
The Hurricanes opened their girls Pool F campaign against Moe Meteors on Saturday and matched their opponents throughout the opening term to take a 6-5 lead into the first break.
The second quarter proved to be a harder contest with Hamilton adding just two points, as Moe edged two points clear at half time.
A 28 points to 11 second half ensured the Hurricanes claimed victory with Saskia Gould putting up a game-high 11 points to guide the team to a comfortable 36-21 win.
Warragul Warriors awaited Hamilton in round two and the locals continued their round one form, putting up 14 points in the first quarter to lead by 12 at the first break and went on to win, 52-18, thanks to 23 points from Gould.
Hamilton took on Shepparton Gators in round three, and the winning streak was extended to three, as the Hurricanes dominated the first half to lead 25-6 at the main break, before claiming a 49-20 victory.
Once again, it was Gould who was the standout with 18 points, while Ruby Cleaver found her range with 15 of her own.
A round four bye allowed the squad to freshen up before playing their fourth game of the day in round five against the Echuca Pirates.
The Hurricanes once again dominated proceedings, putting up 25 points to 10 in the first half before keeping Echuca scoreless in the second half to run away comfortable 39-10 victors.
Holly Rook added eight points for the Hurricanes.
Phase two of the championships took place on Sunday with the Hurricanes taking to the court against Romsey Trailblazers.
The winning streak came to an end, with Hamilton putting up 18 points to fall 13 short against the Trailblazers.
Another loss to Wonthaggi in Sunday’s second game, despite an eight-point first period for the Hurricanes, eventually losing 23-29.
The Hurricanes got back on the winners list in the third game, accounting for the Swan Hill Flyers, 30-23, off the back of 13 points for Rook.
Hamilton did enough to qualify for finals, facing Southern Peninsula in the quarter final stage.
A dominant first half set up a comfortable win for the Hurricanes, winning 37-22.
A 35-33 semi-final win against Wodonga Wolves saw the Hurricanes progress into the division two decider against Pakenham Warriors, where Hamilton won, 39-31.
Gould was the standout in the final, finishing with 18 points.

THE Hamilton team opened its weekend with a 35-24 Pool A win against Swan Hill Flyers with Charlie Baker’s nine points the standout for the winners.
Ned Hintum scored a team-high nine points in the Hurricanes’ 23-67 loss to Ballarat Miners, which was followed by a round three bye.
Sunday started with a 16-53 phase two loss to Bendigo Braves, before Macedon Ranges accounted for the Hurricanes, 57-31, in the second game despite 12 points from Riley Iredell.
Shepparton Gators made it three losses from as many games for the Hurricanes with a 42-35 win.
Angus Knight put up 10 points to lead Hamilton’s scoring, while Jobe Dunn finished with nine.
The Hurricanes faced Mildura Heat in a quarter final with Hamilton falling short, 35-62.
Abdul Muhktar was the top-scorer for Hamilton with nine points.
