Heywood basketball officially returns

THE Heywood Basketball Association was back in action for the first time in three years this week, with Heywood Hoops, senior women’s and senior men’s basketball all on show.

Kicking off the big week of basketball was the Heywood Hoops program on Monday afternoon which is aimed at providing an introduction to the game for five-to-12-year-olds.

Following the Hoops was the senior women’s competition with two tough games being played out at the Heywood and District Secondary College gym.

Flyers got off to a strong start against Flames to win their first game of the eight-round season, 52-14.

Yakirah Agnew and Lucy Burns dominated for the winners, combining for a total of 32 points.

In the second women’s clash of the night Ashlee Van Wegen starred for Spirit, hitting 28 points against Stars to win, 57-12.

There are five teams in the women’s competition with Lightning having a bye in round one.

• The senior men’s competition had a welcomed return to Heywood on Wednesday night, playing their first matches since 2016.

There were some closer contests across round one with six teams entered in the competition.

Celtix had plenty of contributors across the court to defeat Bucks, 48-33.

Leon Davis top scored for the winners hitting 16 points and was complemented by a strong performance from Seth Harvey who slotted 14 points.

Billy Bell did what he could for Bucks, hitting 15 points for the game.

In the second game of the night Lakers were too strong for Cavaliers claiming a 43-28 victory.

Sean Bell was the highest scorer for Lakers with 14 points while CBL post player Nathan Hardingham was a solid support with 12 points.

Aaron Morgan top scored for the game hitting 16 points for Cavaliers.
