Hurricanes record mixed results at Warrnambool Seaside Classic

HAMILTON Hurricanes basketball squads enjoyed mixed results at the annual Junior Seaside Classic Basketball Tournament in Warrnambool over the weekend.

The Hurricanes entered teams in all age groups for both boys and girls and came away with three runner-up finishes in the Under-12 Boys Div1, the Under-12 Girls Div1 and the Under-14 Girls Div1 competitions.

Under-18 Boys Div1

THE boys team started the tournament well with victories against Terang (35-25, Josh Miller 14) and Mount Gambier (44-23, Josh Miller 25), but fell short against Warrnambool (26-33, Miller 11) to round out the preliminary matches.

Come the first round of finals, the Hurricanes were up against Portland from the other pool and fell short, 35-38, (Bailey Baker 9), but then played Mount Gambier in the consolation final and went on to win, 46-40, with Baker scoring nine points.

Under-18 Boys Div2

THE team started its tournament well with victories against Portland (29-28, Jack Roberts 8), Casterton (18-10, Jack Roberts and Archie Hintum 6) and Colac (34-26, Hintum 11), before falling to Maryborough (34-39, Hintum 12).

Under-18 Girls Div1

THE side went down narrowly to Colac (27-28, Maddison Cotten 8) in the first round and drew the game with Portland (36-36, Cotten 10) in round two.

A loss to Warrnambool (13-41, Karoraina Karatau-Keightley 5) rounded out their final preliminary matches.

The team played Maryborough in their quarter-final and posted another victory (30-20, Avreet Kaur 10), before losing the semi-final against Portland (14-36).

Under-16 Boys Div1

VICTORY against Portland (48-35, Jack Sobey 12) gave the boys the perfect start to their tournament.

It proved to be their only success though, as the side suffered losses to Warrnambool (29-57, Frank Gill 11), Seymour (39-46, Gill 13) and Traralgon (34-37, Matthew Calvert 14) and a draw with Colac (35-35, Jobe Dunn 12) rounded out the carnival.

Under-16 Girls Div1

THE girls didn’t enjoy the results they were looking for on the weekend, as the team lost to Millicent (17-22, Saskia Gould 5), Colac (17-33, Gould 7), Traralgon (37-55, Holly Rhook, Ruby Cleaver 10), Portland (27-37, Ayla Ewing 7) and Warrnambool (19-66, Ewing 6).

Under-14 Boys Div1

RESULTS didn’t go the way of the team with the side failing to gain a victory.

 They lost to Portland (28-33, Oscar Elliott 8), Colac (20-48, Zanda Ewing 8), Warrnambool (12-68, Elliott 6), and Traralgon (22-62, Harvey Miller 13).

Under-14 Boys Div2

HAMILTON gained a victory against Colac (33-22, Lucas Dumesny 10), but lost to Warrnambool (10-49, Jack McCulloch 4), Maryborough (31-35, Taima Thomas 12), Terang (17-34, Harry Tonissen 5) and Millicent (30-33, McCulloch 8).

Under-14 Girls Div1

THE squad opened the tournament with two strong victories against Colac (23-19, Emily Iredell, Maddox Ryan and Charlize Cooper 5) and Portland (32-21, Lucy Jennings 10).

They then fell at the next hurdle, as Warrnambool grabbed a one-point win (24-25, Emily Iredell 8) to have the Hurricanes head into the semi-finals against Colac with the result a repeat of the round one match (23-20, Molly Sevior 7).

The girls headed into the grand-final against Warrnambool and despite battling hard all game they fell (17-26) with Ryan top-scoring for the Hurricanes with six points.

Under-14 Girls Div2

THE side had a tough outing, unable to win a game, but gained valuable experience at this higher level that will see the players improve as they play more games together.

The side lost to Warrnambool (11-19, Evie Grinham 4), Colac (23-27, Grinham 7), Millicent (16-21, Grinham 6) and Maryborough (11-31, Elsie Brown 5).

Under-12 Boys Div1

THE boys had great success over the weekend, starting on a winning note.

The team brushed aside Portland (39-25, Manaia Bremner 13), Colac (40-26, Connor Crawford 15) and Warrnambool (28-20, Manaia Bremner 9), before falling to Traralgon (35-51, Manaia Bremner 10) in its last preliminary game.

The Hurricanes had done enough to reach the grand final and faced Traralgon again.

Despite performing well, the side went down 40-47 with Manaia Bremner (15), Harry Manley (11) and Connor Crawford (10) leading the Hurricanes’ three-pronged attack.

Under-12 Boys Div2

THE team failed to secure a victory, but took big strides in their development.

The team went down to Maryborough (30-32, Kobe Fitzgerald 10), Terang (24-27, Dylan Nedziwe 10), Port Fairy (20-44, Fitzgerald 15) and Warrnambool (17-18, Fitzgerald, Harrison Foley and Noah O’Connor 4).

Under-12 Girls Div1

THE girls also finished runner-up, registering victories against Colac (28-18) and Millicent (23-8), but went down to Warrnambool (12-44) in the preliminary rounds.

The Hurricanes then came up against Millicent in the semi-final and came away with a hard-fought victory (11-9), as the Millicent girls took the game right up to the Hurricanes.

The victory gave the Hurricanes the chance to reverse the earlier result, but Warrnambool starved the Hurricanes of possession, as the girls fell to a 11-31 loss.

Under-12 Girls Div2

THE squad enjoyed two victories along with two losses, as it came away from the tournament with great experience and knowledge as to what it must do to claim a spot in the grand-final the next time all these teams meet.

The girls defeated Colac (29-2, Mischa Thomas 11) and Maryborough (16-6, Thomas 5) but went down to Warrnambool (10-23, Thomas 6) and Portland (9-29, Thomas 4).

Under-12 Girls Div3

THE players are gaining experience to carry them on towards higher honours and was unable to record a victory.

The team did manage to draw against rival, Warrnambool Blue (17-17, Johanna Winnell 5), but went down to Terang (14-24, Vogue Fleming, Imogen Barr 6), Casterton (6-15, Nina Roll 4) and Warrnambool White (11-15, Winnell 7).
