HAMILTON Hurricanes junior basketballers have a new team to celebrate this week after the Under-12A Boys team travelled to Mount Gambier and came away with the title, while the Under-12 Girls finished runners-up.
Under-12A Boys
THE boys started with a whitewash of Riverland, 76-24, followed by victories against Mt Gambier (61-23), Portland (42-28), a bye and finally a 37-27 win against Bordertown, giving the locals top spot.
A grand final rematch against Bordertown saw a closer result, but the Hurricanes came away with the 38-31 victory to grab the title.
Connor Crawford was the top-scorer for the competition with 73 points to his name, and the highest average points per game with 14.3.
Under-12 Girls
THE girls didn’t want the boys to have all the headlines, as the team took care of Millicent, 27-16 in round one, Riverland 27-14 in round two, with a bye in round three.
The Hurricanes returned to the court and accounted for Strathalbyn 34-11 and Bordertown 41-8 in the last round of the preliminary rounds.
The locals were matched up against Millicent in the decider and despite playing well, the side dropped behind by four points late in the game.
The team clawed their way back into the match, falling short by the barest of margins, 11-12.
