HAMILTON’S Gray Street Primary School is celebrating the success of two of the school’s basketball teams, which delivered on the big stage last week.
The Senior Girls’ team and the Year 4 Boys team both competed in the Hooptime State Titles held at Dandenong last Monday, with the girls gaining a semi-final spot and the boys coming away with two victories across the day.
Back in July, the local schools from Hamilton, Dunkeld, Tarrington and surrounds converged at HILAC to compete in the local section of the Hooptime carnival with both Gray Street Primary teams advancing to the next level with undefeated records to their credit.
The regional section was also held at HILAC with teams from Horsham, Warrnambool and Portland competing and the two local teams again completed the carnival unbowed.
With success under their belts, the teams advanced to the state finals in Dandenong and the Senior Girls’ team continued their unbeaten run with victory in all four preliminary rounds, and the quarter-final against Sacred Heart College.
The wins earnt the side a match-up with eventual winners Holy Trinity.
Despite being very tired from both the travel to the carnival and the games played, the girls were magnificent but fell short by a few points to keep their record intact as Charlize Cooper and Evie Grinham shone for Gray St.
This same group of players also made it all the way to the netball state finals too, highlighting their athletic prowess.
The Year 4 boys had five preliminary games with the team winning two, but dropping the other three contests.
Manaia Bremner and Kobe Fitzgerald played particularly well on the day, along with the rest of the side.
The performance is outstanding for such a small school to have two teams participate at this level and is a credit to the school and its sport programme.
