TWO of Portland’s young rising stars in basketball suited up for high level representative play across the weekend.
Summer Millard suited up for NBL1 side Mount Gambier Pioneers in their first games for the season, while Tyleah Barr played in her third match for Warrnambool Mermaids in division one Big V competition on Sunday.
Barr had an impressive showing for the Mermaids, top scoring for the side despite their 83-68 loss to Bellarine.
It was a 17-point performance from Barr who hit nine of those from the three-point line throughout her 25 minutes on the court.
Warrnambool’s fourth quarter was their undoing, as they managed to stay within five points of Bellarine before the Mermaids were outscored 31-21 in the final term.
Barr took to the court alongside Warrnambool netballer Amy Wormald, who she played against the day before in round one of the Hampden Football Netball League, with Wormald hitting 14 points for the Mermaids.
Millard’s Mount Gambier side played two games across the weekend, winning on Saturday against Sandringham, 78-74.
The junior had some court time on Sunday when the side had an 87-69 win against Nunawading, with Millard attempting a buzzer beating three-point shot in the final quarter.
Warrnambool will return to the court on Saturday April 15 against Western Port while Millard’s Mount Gambier side will take on Casey on Friday April 14 in Mount Gambier.
