Saints sweep the court with two wins

THE Hamilton Basketball Association season continued this week with round two games played.

Women’s Division 1

St Mary’s Black d Minders

THE round started on Tuesday night with a clash between two typically strong clubs, as the Saints grabbed the early ascendency and controlled the game from early on.

Minders continued to apply plenty of pressure, but the scoreboard favoured the Saints at the main break, 22-14.

Eight points wasn’t a game-winning lead, but Minders knew they needed to be more efficient in offence and improve their shooting accuracy, with Caeleigh Humphries and Phoebe Carlin leading the way, putting up seven and six points respectively.

It wasn’t enough though, with Minders eventually going down, 20-30.

Charlize Cooper top-scored for Black with nine points, while Saskia Gould chipped in with eight points of her own.

St Mary’s Orange d Tigers

IT was a clean sweep for the Saints, with Orange also collecting a win in the late game against Tigers, 39-16.

Tigers struggled to match the intensity of the Saints, playing with only four players, giving Orange free reign to play a fast-paced game and tire the Tigers out.

The half time margin sat at 10 points, but it was the tired legs that saw the Tigers drop off, as the Saints continued to push on and put up 21 points to eight in the second half to win by 23 points.

Molly O’Brien was the standout Tiger, putting up nine points, while Grace Cleaver shot a game-high 10 points for St Mary’s Orange.

Men’s Division 1

Minders d St Mary’s Black

WEDNESDAY night’s schedule started with Minders taking on St Mary’s Black, with the latter falling 14 points short at the final buzzer.

Minders didn’t waste anytime putting a scoreboard buffer together, putting up plenty of baskets and going into the half time break leading, 23-11.

Black tried to work its way back into the contest, putting up 23 points in the second half, but Minders’ efforts across the court saw the team add 25 points to go on and win, 48-34.

Paul Churchill led the way for the winners, finishing the game with 12 points, while Craig Jackson put up 11 points for St Mary’s.

Barber Boys White d Barber Boys

IT was a blowout in the club derby to finish off round two, with White recording a resounding 29-point victory to maintain an unbeaten start to the season.

White burst out of the blocks and shot the lights out early, as the team found their range early and made Barber Boys pay on the scoreboard.

By half time, the margin was already out to 14 points, and Barber Boys was looking down the barrel of a round two loss.

Nathan Hardingham continued to have a presence, and his 19 points ensured White got the win, 63-34.

Sam English top-scored for Barber Boys with 10 points.
