Hurricanes win two titles in Warrnambool

HAMILTON Hurricanes travelled to Warrnambool on the weekend for that city’s annual tournament and came away with two titles as the Under-12 Girls and the Under-16 Boys both won their competitions.

The first success of the weekend came in the Under-12 Girls Division 3 grade as the Hurricanes made the grand final after winning two of the three round games, with the only loss coming against Warrnambool Mermaids in round three.

Navvi Thomas had the hot hand for the Hurricanes in the victories over Portland (37-15) and Colac Kookas Green (33-2), while Grace Macgugan put up six points in the narrow loss to Warrnambool, 19-20.

The semi final saw the Hurricanes account for Portland Coasters, 25-20 with Thomas (10) and Ruby Rankin (eight) dominating the scoring, while the team had its revenge against the Mermaids in the grand final reversing the earlier result, 22-13 as Macgugan (eight) and Harper Brian (six) stood tall on the scoresheet.

Under-16 Boys Div 3

THE second success of the weekend came in the Under-16 Boys Division 3 competition as the Hurricanes finished second on the ladder after winning four of its five round games.

Round one saw the Hurricanes defeat Portland Coasters (38-24), with Oscar Templeton (10) and Harry Mercer (10) were the avenues to the hoop, while round two had the side against Koroit and again the side won (42-19) as Mercer put up 18 points.

The third game was the only blemish for the weekend as Ararat took the win, 31-28 as Mercer (nine) again scored well, but it was back to winning in the next game as the Hurricanes brushed Border Sports Academy aside, 40-18 as Mercer posted 24.

Final preliminary round against Colac Kookas White ensured the Hurricanes won through to the grand final as it won, 31-15 as Mercer continued to dominate the scoring with 17 points.

The grand final would see the Hurricanes come from behind in the second half to down Ararat 29-26 as Mercer (eight), and Darcy Milne (seven) shared the scoring to secure victory and the title.

Under-12 Boys Div 1

CONNOR Crawford was the standout performer for the Under-12 Boys Division 1 team as he top-scored for the Hurricanes in every game as he put up 20 points in the 56-12 defeat of Colac Kookaburras Green in round one.

He followed that up with 17 points against Warrnambool Seahawks as the team won 35-33, then 14 against Terang who they beat 33-27, while Traralgon would prove to be their nemesis as the T-Birds won the final round game 39-27 with Crawford posting 14 points and Traralgon would win the grand final against the Hurricanes too, 51-26 as Crawford (eight) and Archie McCulloch (seven) shared the points scoring in the runner-up finish.

Under-12 Boys Div 3

THE Under-12 Boys Division 3 team came away with a 2-2 win-loss record and a third-place finish from the weekend.

William Iredell and Sonny Shepherd were the stand out scores for the carnival as the side was defeated in their semifinal against Border Sports Academy (33-13), but to get to that stage the side was defeated by Border Sports Academy (10-43); a win against Colac Kookas White (20-16) and a loss to Warrnambool Seahawks (8-20).

Under-12 Girls Div 1

THE Hurricanes’ Under-12 Girls Division 1 team reached the semi-finals but were defeated by Warrnambool Mermaids (39-20).

The side was downed by Traralgon T-Birds in round one (11-16) and the Mermaids in round three (36-9) but did have success against Colac Kookas Green in round two (43-22) with Nina Roll, Hana Churchill, Imogen Baulch, Mekides and Alani Rook all scoring well.

Under-14 Boys Div 1

HAMILTON’S Under-14 Boys Division 1 team came away with two wins and three losses for the carnival.

After losing the first three games – 18-31 to Bendigo Braves, 22-42 to Warrnambool Seahawks and 33-35 to Traralgon T-Birds – the Hurricanes regrouped to defeat Colac Kookas Green (55-27) as Zander Ewing produced 22 points and backed that result up with a 32-29 defeat of Portland Coasters as Taima Thomas top scored.

Under-14 Boys Div 2

AFTER having the bye in round one, the Under-14 Boys Division 2 team began with victory against Terang Tornadoes (31-30).

They then lost to Warrnambool Seahawks (24-52), Port Fairy Pacers (20-36) and finally to Border Sports Academy (24-32) as Will Kamp, Baxter Walkenhorst, Kobe Fitzgerald and Oliver Chandler shared the scoring for the weekend.

Under-14 Girls Div 1

THE Under-14 Girls Division 1 team finished fourth for the carnival after coming home with two wins and three losses from its five games.

Round one saw the side start well with a win over Warrnambool (23-19), then defeats against Millicent Magic (23-26), Bendigo Braves (20-37) and Colac Kookas Green (24-25) stopped the team from advancing to the finals but a last round victory against Portland Coasters (19-12) gave the side confidence going into the next carnival.

Under-14 Girls Div 2

ANOTHER side to finish fourth was the Under-14 Girls Division 2 team which lost round one to Bendigo Braves (17-27).

Round two gave the side success in defeating Colac Kookas White (26-14), round three was a loss to Maryborough Blazers (15-28), round four and the side was back in the winners list against Terang Tornadoes (25-15), while the last round was a loss to Warrnambool Mermaids (11-34).

Under-16 Boys Div 1

THE Under-16 Boys Division 1 team reached the quarter-finals after posting wins against Portland Coasters (43-36) in round one and round three against Colac Kookas Green (64-35).

A loss to Warrnambool Seahawks (32-50) in round two saw the side draw the tougher path in the finals and they lost to Horsham Hornets (29-40), with Riley Iredell, Angus Ewing and Abdul Muhktar dominating the scoring for the side over the carnival.

Under-16 Girls Div 1

TWO losses and two victories over the course of the carnival for the Under-16 Girls Division 1 team an indication of where it needs to improve by the time of the next competition.

The side started the weekend with a solid display against Colac Kookas Green in round one, winning 33-28), but losses to sale Sonics (27-30) and Warrnambool Mermaids (29-32) before a final victory against Portland Coasters (45-26) gives the side momentum going forward.

Under-18 Boys Div 1

THE Under-18 Boys Division 1 team had a good but tough weekend as it went down in two of its preliminary games against Bendigo Braves (24-28) and Portland Coasters (22-46).

Victory against Warrnambool Seahawks (36-31) saw the side advance to the quarterfinal against Bendigo where they went down (22-47) with Daniel Spillman, Zac Elliott, Craig Jackson and the rest of the squad all adding to the scoring.
