IT was a double header for the Hamilton Hurricanes at the weekend, going down to Terang and Mt Gambier at HILAC in round eight Country Basketball League (CBL) action.
THE locals opened the round with a match against Terang on Saturday night, with a slow start proving costly.
A 13-31 opening term gave Hamilton plenty of work to do, as Scott Judd put up 15 points for the visitors, while Josh Miller put up seven points.
The second quarter saw the Hurricanes work into the contest, closing the deficit to 14 points by half time.
A three-pointer from Archie Porter in the opening 10 seconds of the second half saw the crowd start to get into the contest, as Sam Brewer’s offensive drives to the ring started to get some flow.
The locals got to within nine points, but it was the Tornadoes who did enough to go into the final break up by 18 points and eventually win, 83-60.
Miller was the standout scorer for the home side with 19 points.
Hamilton co-coach, Scott Miller told The Spectator after the game that there was plenty to work on.
“It was probably our worst performance for the year so far, we just didn’t play our plays well and our defence wasn’t there,” he said.
“We showed a glimpse in the second and start of the third to get back in the game … but they shot better than us.
“Just a bit of a rusty night.
“Just disappointing we weren’t at our best, we know we are better than that.
“I feel like if we had of played our best, we would have been a chance.”
The Hurricanes were back on the court on Sunday for a home game against the Lakers, with the locals starting off positively, but falling away late in each of the halves.
Hamilton trailed by just five points at quarter time, before the visitors blew the margin out to 16 by the main break.
By the final break, the margin sat at 21 before the Lakers went on to record a comfortable 93-52 win and finish the round in second position on the ladder.
Bailey Cooper impressed for the Hurricanes with 12 points, while Joel Le Roy put up 11 in support for the locals.
