Squad success

THE Hamilton Hurricanes sent multiple Under-12 and Under-14 teams to Portland for the second weekend of the Junior South West Classic junior basketball squad tournament last weekend.

Under-14A Boys

THE Under-14A Boys opened their weekend with a clash against Warrnambool Seahawks 14.2, putting together a 28-11 first half and eventually winning, 48-29, before following it up with a 43-14 round two win against Mount Gambier.

The Hurricanes had a bye in round three, finishing Saturday on the sidelines and freshening the team up for a busy Sunday schedule.

Portland was first up on day two and the Hurricanes dominated proceedings to win, 51-25, and also accounted for Terang by 37 points to finish the group stage undefeated.

A rematch against Portland awaited Hamilton in the grand final and it was a tense contest throughout, with the Hurricanes falling just short of a perfect record, losing 51-53.

Under-14B Boys

THE Under-14 Boys Development Team had two great wins on Saturday against Stawell and Mount Gambier, showing great defensive play and smart decision making on the court.

The boys worked really well together to create opportunities for all players to score.

The Hurricanes lost their round four match against Warrnambool and then finished off with a strong win against Timboon to round out the tournament.

Missing the semi-finals by one position on the ladder was unlucky, but a great display of hard work, great communication and teamwork showed this weekend and the team should be really proud of their efforts.

Under-14A Girls

HAMILTON’S Under-14A Girls team started the tournament off strongly playing an unknown team, Mt Gambier Lakers, first up.

They took control of the game from the tip off and led at half time, 26-6.

Taya Sherlock top-scored with 15 points, as Hamilton won, 45-8.

Next up they faced Warrnambool.2, and the Hurricanes put on an impressive display from the super quick defensive duo of Grace O’Sullivan and Pippa Richards.

With Elsie Brown and Yolanda O’Sullivan top scoring with eight each, helping Hamilton claim a 30-12 victory.

Round three was against the Portland Coasters, and it was a physical game where Emily Iredell managed to shake a hard tag and add 12 points to the score board, as the Hurricanes won, 28-14.

In the semi-final, Hamilton faced off against Mount Gambier, and it was a great team effort with all players contributing to the score.

With focus on our offence strategies, the girls executed the game plan with confidence, finishing with a convincing 51-11 result.

Portland awaited Hamilton in the grand final, and the Hurricanes knew it was going to be a tough challenge in front of the Portland crowd.

The first half saw both teams trying to get the early lead, and once again it was a highly contested ball, with Leni Robertson working hard, forcing regular turnovers and Willow Boughton capitalizing on the rebounds.

Yolanda O’Sullivan and Iredell had strong all-round performances, helping their team to a 48-35 victory.

Under-14B Girls

THE Under-14B girls had a very successful weekend, going through undefeated, in a stunning weekend for the team.

The girls fought hard in every game, especially the semi-final and grand final, with multiple players in foul trouble early.

Despite that, Hamilton managed to hang on and get the win over Terang by three points.

This team continued to showcase team-first play, aggressive defence, and an unbreakable camaraderie that made them a very exciting team to watch.

Under-12A Boys

THE Under-12A Boys campaign started off with a strong win over the Terang Tornadoes by eight points.

Round two saw Hamilton face-off against the ever-competitive Warrnambool Seahawks, where an even contest was played, but it was accurate shooting and teamwork that got Hamilton over the line by four points at the final buzzer.

Round three saw the locals collect another strong win, this time over Mt Gambier by 14 points, as was round five, with a 26-point win over the local side, Portland.

Going into the grand final undefeated for the weekend, the young Hurricanes knew it was going to be tight game and expected Warrnambool to be out for revenge.

A game with ever changing leads, vocal crowd members and not to mention great basketball played by some of the region’s best, it went down to the wire, with Warrnambool eventually edging out Hamilton by four points.

Under-12B Boys

HAMILTON’S Under-12B Boys had a strong start to the weekend with a hard fought one-point win against Warrnambool Seahawks 12.3, a team that the boys had come up against twice before without any luck.

In the second game, newcomer, Kahn Murray, had a strong game alongside to assist his teammates to come out on top against Stawell Wildcats, 40-15.

After a challenging game against the Maryborough Blazers, the boys fought hard in a neck-and-neck game against Mount Gambier Lakers Blue, ultimately going down by three points to head into their first finals game of the squad season against Warrnambool Seahawks 12.2.

Despite a strong defensive effort, they weren’t able to get the win, but should be proud of the huge improvements they have made their excellent sportsmanship throughout the squad season.

Under-12B Girls

THE Hurricanes Umder-12B Girls squad left their mark in Portland, delivering a weekend filled with teamwork and determination.

Saturday consisted of four intense games, with our girls securing three well-deserved victories.

Teamwork was a main aspect to our success over the weekend with each individual playing their role.

Sunday saw us compete in a semi-final against the very strong Warrnambool Mermaids 2.

Despite our great passing sequences and pressure defence, Hamilton fell short of victory.

The weekend was still an impressive outing for the team, with lots of excitement and teamwork displayed throughout.
