Shawnee climbs to the top of the PBA

SHAWNEE secured a highly successful Portland Basketball Association campaign across both men’s and women’s division one competitions with grand final victories on Sunday.

Both games were hotly contested and extremely close, with the games won and lost within the final couple of minutes in each case.

The women were on earlier, and Shawnee ended up locked in a close battle with Tigersharks Gold, despite threatening to get away early in the piece.

It was the scoring of Heidi Jones which propelled Shawnee to its early lead, as she finished up with 14 points and would later receive grand final MVP honours.

However, Tigersharks was able to respond through Maddi-Lyse Stone and Rhi Davis, with the pair scoring 15 and 10 points on the game respectively.

The result at half time was a draw at 17-all, with both teams having good reason to believe they could get over the line.

A back-and-forth final term soon ensued, with both teams having their opportunities to win the game, as Stone hit some big shots for Tigersharks to put them in front.

However, Shawnee’s grand final experience shone through in the end, with Jones hitting a huge triple late in the game to put them ahead and secure the win for her team, with the final score readying 37-34.

Division one men

It was a case of déjà vu in the later fixture as the same two clubs competed, with Shawnee defeating Tigersharks Red 64-60 in climatic fashion.

Nick Peters was the last-second hero for his side, able to seal their victory in the most extraordinary manner possible.

With the shot clock winding down, he hoisted up a running shot from beyond the arc and nailed it, extending his side’s lead to an essentially unassailable four points with a few seconds remaining.

Shawnee was the better side through one half, able to find a more even spread of scorers with the likes of Sam Peters, Logan Edwards, Flynn Chapman and Nick Peters all contributing.

In saying this, Tigersharks was able to remain within striking distance at the main break, courtesy of the sharpshooting Hayden Annett.

The result was Shawnee leading 30-24 at half time, with the game still well and truly for the taking.

And Tigersharks were able to step to the plate, with Klay Nicholls hitting some timely threes while Brad Clark cleaned up on the glass.

In addition, experienced hand Trenton Johnston was able to also knock down some vital shots to help keep his side in the game.

For Shawnee’s part they were also able to continue to hit the scoreboard through their variety of options, most notably the long-range shooting of Chapman with his four threes, and it became a tied game at 60-all.

It was at this juncture that Nick Peters stepped up to hit his miraculous shot to secure the win, while Chapman would later be named grand final MVP for his efforts as both a scorer and defensively.

Division two women

Shawnee was able to secure a division two win convincingly over Tigersharks Gold, with the final score reading 54-31.

Courtney Gadsden (21 points) and Maddison Kanoa (16 points) led the charge for Shawnee as they rolled through with a dominant 32-14 first half to put the game more or less to bed.

Indi Rowe (12 points) was Tigersharks’ top scorer, with Kanoa taking out grand final MVP honours.

Division two men

Mustangs produced a huge comeback to topple Shawnee Gold in the men’s division two grand final 57-46, after trailing 32-24 at half time.

Shawnee got the better start to the game courtesy of the shooting of Angus Impey and Chad Finck, who had four and three triples respectively, as took their eight-point lead at the break.

However, Mustangs rebounded in the second half in a big way, primarily through eventual grand final MVP Toby Oakley (16 points) and Connor Peters (19 points) scoring wise, as they limited Shawnee to just 14 second half points.

Impey finished with 18 points on the game, while Finck and Bodhi Duncan had 10 points each.

Division three women

Tigersharks Red proved too much for Tigersharks Grey after a huge 21-5 second half performance helped them secure the win.

Red was bolstered by a very even spread of scorers, as Airlie Aldridge and grand final MVP Cassie Jewell top scored for them with eight points each.

After trailing 13-10 at the half, Red stepped up their intensity at both ends of the court, more than doubling their own scoring output while limiting their opponents to just five points for the entire 20 minutes.

Division three men

Tigersharks Gold was too good for Tigersharks Grey in their division three men’s clash, taking out the honours with a 51-34 victory.

Grand final MVP Mark Pitt top scored on the game with 22 points, while Luke Bevan added 16.

Hunter Rowe (15 points) and Brodie Carter (14 points) led the way for the defeated Tigersharks Grey.

Division four women

In an even matchup between the two sides, it was Tigersharks Red which got the best of Tigersharks Gold in the division four grand final, 37-30.

Stella Seitz (11 points) and Kellie Wakely (10 points) were the winners’ top scorers, while grand final MVP went to a valiant Teagan Sealey, who scored 13 points in a losing effort.

Division four men

A dominant first half for Tigersharks Red was enough to lift it over Shawnee Blue 41-31.

Jake Dare (12 points) and Noah Thomas (11 points) led the charge scoring wise for the victors, but it was big man Coby Sheehan who took out grand final MVP honours.

Division five women

Tigersharks Grey got the best of Beavers White in their division five women’s clash, in large part thanks to a 22-7 first half.

Lisa Hein was the lone double-digit scorer for the game with her 10 points for the victors, while it was Maddison Amundsen who took out grand final MVP.

The final score was 34-18.
