Nine locals look to be Gold Nugget

NINE local athletes will be showcasing their skills this week in Ballarat at the annual Basketball Victoria Gold Nugget camp, where the best 240 Under-14 players from across the state all converge on the gold mining town hoping to be ‘found’.

Zanda Ewing, Taima Thomas, Cooper Kearney, Harry Manley, Aidan Mhasho, Emily Iredell, Yolanda O'Sullivan, Pippa Richards, and Leni Robertson all earned their way into the prestigious camp via a series of days that were held over the last few months.

Hamilton Basketball Association hub coach, Nathan Manley, was able to help whittle down a starting group of 140 male and female players who first attended the initial session back in March, from which the squads for Warrnambool, Hamilton, Portland etc were selected.

Manley had a squad of 18 players originally, but injuries and unavailability reduced the squad to 14 and the players were put through 12 sessions every Wednesday night throughout second term, as nine locals eventually earnt selection for the Ballarat camp.

The Gold Nugget camp is held over two days with the boys attending on Wednesday and the girls going through their paces on Thursday.

“The players selected have all earned the right to attend the camp and they will be put through a series of drills that make them perform under a game simulation, be it in offence or defence,” Manley said.

“Basketball Victoria is seeking those players who can show ‘independent problem solving’ and ‘zero second response time’ in their individual decision making during these drills.

“From the camp, the players will go on to be selected to attend the Albury Cup, which is for the younger players or the Southern Cross Challenge for the older players.

“This has been a great group of athletes to coach, and I will be attending both days and hoping that we get as many as possible through to the next stage.”
