Middleweight belt beckons for Riddle

JAYDEN Riddle will be hunting for his first title when he gets into the ring tonight.

Riddle is locked in to face the undefeated Mitchell Leek, who has yet to lose after seven bouts, with the winner set to get the vacant Victorian Middleweight Title.

The step up in weight will mean the local won’t have to cut any weight, after last competing in May in a welterweight bout, which ended in a majority draw.

The 72.5kg bout at Melbourne Pavillion is scheduled for eight rounds, which should help Riddle according to his coach, Ray ‘Mocka’ McIntosh.

“You have got to give Jayden six to eight rounds to get to his best,” he said.

“We have got our plan in place, we have done our homework (and) we are going in there fight ready.”

Tonight’s bout culminates a 10-week fight camp, with a win set to open other opportunities for the Hamilton-based boxer.

“We will fight him at this then hopefully he will win the title,” McIntosh said.

“We have got a strategy for after that if it goes to plan.”

It has been a lean stretch for Riddle, going without a win dating back to 2019, but McIntosh said he was confident Riddle would be primed for the bout.

“It means he has got hungrier to get a win, we have had a few bad decisions and now we need a good one,” he said.

“We have sparred with him before, that’s why we took the fight.”

Riddle and his crew weighed in at 4.30pm yesterday, with tonight’s card set to be live streamed online.
