A BOUT TIME

AFTER eight years, boxing is set to return to Hamilton with an event scheduled at the Hamilton Showgrounds on May 5.

Mocka’s Boxing Club is the driving force behind it with the intention of showcasing the local talent in the region, while also paying tribute to former club members, Adam McClure and Mitch Clark.

The card is set to have at least 15 bouts, which are set to be either three two-minute rounds, or three three-minute rounds.

Ray ‘Mocka’ McIntosh told The Spectator he was excited to bring boxing back to Hamilton.

“We were always going to do our own, the last one was in 2016, we have done Casterton a couple of times, but we wanted to do this and showcase the talent in the Western District,” he said.

“The whole club is involved, showing the talent that is coming through.

“We are fortunate they (Katie and Jayden Riddle) are part of the club and they are just at that level.

“It showcases the club and the work we do and put it on display.”

With a big card set, McIntosh said he expected plenty of exposure for the locals.

“I would say at least 10 from the club will be in the ring, with others from clubs in Geelong, Warrnambool and Portland,” he said.

“The card will be released on the day, but we will have plenty to work with, even if anyone has to pull out for other commitments.

“I have got a couple of novices I want to put out after the exhibition, so it will be good for them to get that crowd experience.

“It holds about 800 people, but I will be happy for around 300.”

McIntosh is also hoping some people may get hooked on the spot after watching it locally

“Not everyone plays cricket or footy, so it is an alternative and we are fortunate that Donald, Katie and Imogen have got their coaches licence and Jayden will get his next, so I can share the responsibility now,” he said.

“That is good for the club, because I can’t go forever.”

Tickets will be available at the door, or you can prebook through the club’s Facebook page.
