Boxing a big hit

SUNDAY’S boxing event in Hamilton proved a big hit, with around 600 spectators at the Hamilton Showgrounds for the town’s first boxing event in eight years.

Mocka’s Boxing Club was the driving force behind it, with the exhibition event designed to give locals a chance to get in the ring in front of a crowd, as part of their progression towards an amateur debut.

Ray ‘Mocka’ McIntosh said the event exceeded his expectations.

“From the club point of view, everyone played their role and it went like clockwork from the first bout to the last bout,” he said.

“It was an 18-card bout with a mixture of visiting clubs and our own club members.

“The few I want to get on the road this year, they performed up to standard.”

With a big crowd attending, McIntosh said the feedback was positive and the proceeds will ensure the club continues to push forward with travel expenses covered easier.

“Incredible feedback, the crowd enjoyed the entertainment and everyone boxed to expectations.

One of the main highlights of the day was a bout between Lindsey Fush and Laird Colliton, with the two locals going toe-to-toe.

McIntosh said the pair trained hard ahead of the bout.

“Lindsay Fush Laird Colliton both put in four months work of training,” he said.

“As far as the local novices, I am excited to have them on the road very shortly, I am looking at a tournament in Mount Gambier on June 29.”

With the success of the event, McIntosh hasn’t ruled out another event in Hamilton in the near future.

“I think the crowd enjoyed what was on display,” he said.

“The whole exhibition went like clockwork.

“It was a terrific crowd.”
