Eagles advance in Sungold Cup

COLLEGE Cricket Club has advanced in the Sungold Cup after defeating Swifts-Great Western in the quarter final in a convincing performance on Sunday.

After losing the toss, the Eagles had to bowl and started positively through Lachie Watt and Russell Bennett, who both bowled well picking up a wicket each.

It was a strong bowling effort with everyone picking up a wicket, as they kept Swifts/Great Western’s top scorer to just 18 and the total to 109 after the 20 overs.

Leigh Alexander and Jack Kruger got two wickets each, while Henry Bensch also picked up a wicket late in the innings.

Charles Murrie and Heath Schmidt opened the batting for College with 109 the target, and they were confident they could set their team up for victory.

The pair put on 42 before Schmidt was dismissed with 17 next to his name, while Murrie went on to hit 30 which included five boundaries.

After losing Adrian Burn (five) and Hamish Bailey (10), they needed a couple players to stabilise the innings and see them home to victory.

Bensch (16-not-out) and Bennett (23-not-out) were those players and guided the team to win in just the 15th over.

The team will now move on to play in the semi-final tomorrow ahead of a possible appearance in the final in the afternoon.

The Eagles qualified for the competition after winning the Hamilton and District Cricket Association T20 final against St Andrew’s last month.
