WITH local sport’s summer break nearing an end, Hamilton Bowling Club is gearing up for its Try Bowls program.
The development initiative is aimed at people who have done minimal bowling previously and will teach them the fundamentals of the game.
Marg Graham came through the program last year and is taking her place within pennant teams this season and will assist in this year’s program.
“Expectation going into it was just to give it a go and I ended up enjoying it a lot more than I thought I would,” she said.
“There is a lot of strategy that goes into it, so it challenges the mind and technique as well.”
Leanne Sherren said she was excited to expand her knowledge and challenge herself with a new game.
“I have only ever played barefoot bowls at Christmas parties, and because I work a lot during the week, I don’t have a lot of energy to play any high physical sport,” she said.
“You can take it to any level you want it to as well, whether that be club level or higher.”
With both ladies raring to go, they are encouraging others to get involved in the four-week program on Wednesday nights.
“Give it a go, it is often associated with an older generation but that isn’t the case, but I think people should give it a chance,” Graham said.
“There are a lot of younger people joining the sport, you just look at the Commonwealth Games to see that.”
“I think it is something a lot of younger people can do during summer,” Sherren said.
“It is not an expensive sport to play either.”
The program starts on January 25 at 6pm and costs $5 per person on the day.
Registration prior is preferred, but people can turn up on the day if they want.
