YOUNG South Portland cricketer Tighe Warburton continues to go from strength to strength, playing a valuable role in getting Western Waves over the line in their under-15s All Star series match against Mallee Murray last weekend.
A solid spell of bowling saw him finish up with figures of 1-23 off five overs, while also taking a catch, as the Waves were set 136 runs for victory.
Batting at seven, Warburton came to the crease with his side at 5-118, needing a further 18 runs for victory, and while it should have been a relatively simple task, the wickets began to tumble around him.
Eventually the Waves had just one wicket in hand, needing a further six runs for victory, with Warburton at the crease.
And while there were a few nervous moments, Warburton was able to see his side home – with a boundary no less – and finished up on 16 not out in what proved to be a match-winning knock.
He described the match as “good fun,” and said it had been great to see his side get over the line.
“It was great that we got home by one wicket… for myself I was happy I was able to make a few runs and helped the team win,” he said.
“Really I think it’s just a platform to build off, the more time I can get in the middle and the more runs I can make, the better I’ll be for it.”
He added that it was another positive experience for him as he grows and develops as a cricketer.
“It was good to catch up with some of the friends I made during the tournament a couple months ago,” he said.
“The coaches are amazing as well, they keep give us great feedback.”
