Puma junior premiers

GRAMPIANS Cricket Club is celebrating Hamilton and District Junior Cricket Association success after the club added the Under-14 title to the trophy cabinet along with the Under-16 title from earlier in the week.

The Pumas were going to celebrate no matter what after the club’s two Under-14 teams, Grampians and Grampians Pumas, earned a place in the grand final, but it was Grampians which claimed the premiership shield.

Day one at College Turf saw Grampians skipper, Angus Heazlewood, win the toss and he chose to bat first with Hayden Phillips and Mitchell Gordon adding 25 for the first wicket before Phillips (14) was bowled by Oscar Templeton.

That initial wicket came in the seventh over of the day and the Pumas had to wait until the first ball of the 26th over before another wicket fell, as Gordon held up an end with Heazlewood scoring quicker at the other end.

The skipper would top score with 46 before being run out by Hunter Vansomeren and the Grampians posted 7-158 from its allotted 48 overs.

Pumas captain, Levi Templeton, opened day two for the Pumas, as his team set about its run chase with Templeton and Matilda Potter adding 43 for the first wicket before Potter (22) was run out by Heazlewood.

Olivia Read (four) and Grace Potter (seven) came and went but when Oscar Templeton joined his brother in the middle the Pumas went forward as the pair took the score to 135, before Levi retired-not-out for 51.

From there the Pumas lost 7-12 with only Hunter Vansomeren (24) offering any resistance against the Grampians bowlers, who dismissed the Pumas for 9-147 to win by 11 runs.

Hugh Prentice scored 28 and taking 4-13 for Grampians.

Levi Templeton won the man of the match medal and also took out the competition’s batting aggregate and average with 310 runs at 310.00, sharing the wicketkeeping award with Luke Hilsdon from Tarrington with six dismissals.

The bowling awards went to College’s Will Bourke with 13 wickets, while Heazlewood took eight wickets for only seven runs each to claim the average award.
