Southern sides hold the top two spots at midway point

THE Hamilton and District Cricket Association (HDCA) A grade season has been one of new beginnings so far, with the 2023-24 season the first of the new amalgamated Hamilton and Portland competitions.

It has been the southern counterparts which have dominated proceedings so far with Tyrendarra the tearaway leader, losing just one game to date – a DLS loss to the Drews in round three – despite posting 8-236 from 35 overs.

Portland Colts sits second, while St Andrew’s is the highest ranked HDCA-based team in third.

Casterton District had the early momentum, but recent losses have seen the Maroons drop to fourth.

With all but the last round of the year counting towards the one-day ladder, it is shaping up to be a Darras and Colts one-day final, with the Drews requiring certain results to go their way to qualify.

In terms of standouts with the bat, Colts captain, Luke Evans, tops the tally with 409 runs at an average of 58.43 and a highest score of 90, with Grampians skipper, Will Collins, second on the list and averaging 48.5 to score 388 runs so far this season.

Macarthur pair, Michael Brilley (363 runs) and Ollie Wortley (337 runs) have also started positively and have kept the Demons in the hunt for the top four.

Stephen O’Brien has been the standout bowler to date, with 22 wickets for Gorae-Portland, while Jordy Anthony is the best-performed bowler from the northern clubs, grabbing 17 scalps so far for College.

Collins has shown his all-round ability, claiming 14 wickets to sit equal fifth to go with his batting prowess.

With just five rounds remaining, four of which are two-day games, it sets up an enthralling race towards finals with net run rate and bonus points to be pivotal in deciding which teams scrape into the top four.

A grade games resume on January 6 with the last one-day games, with the final two-day game scheduled for February 24 and March 2.

The finals will run with the traditional set-up with 1v4 and 2v3 with the final to be played over two weekends, culminating on either March 23 or 24.
