TYRENDARRA has progressed to the next stage of the 2024 Sungold Cup with a victory against Warrnambool and District Cricket Association’s Allansford-Panmure at Davidson Oval by 24 runs in a quarterfinal of the rich T20 competition, while Macarthur was trounced in its match against City United from Colac.
In a game dominated by each team’s bowling attack, Tyrendarra elected to bat first after winning the toss and while they struggled out the gate, with Darras skipper, Cam Mather, and Lachie Kirk falling early, the onus then fell on Jordi Withers to go to work at number three.
With the support of Ben Menzel (19) and Jake Wilson (12-not-out), Withers was able to put together an excellent showing, making 75-not-out off just 49 deliveries to get the Darras to a competitive total of 6-124.
The Darras were able to control the early going during Allansford-Panmure’s run chase, with none of their top five batsmen making more than eight, with a couple of run outs proving key to the Darras staying on top.
And while Noah Greene (36-not-out) and Kyall Timms (24) were able to stage a fightback, Jake Wilson made the breakthrough before Sam Wilson cleaned up the tail to have the Gators all out for 100.
Sam Wilson finished up with 4-8 from 2.3 overs, while Jake Wilson picked up a pair of scalps of his own.
Mather said he was definitely pleased with the result despite feeling like his side was 25 runs or so short of the target they should have set.
“We were glad to have come away with the win, it was a credit to Jordi for getting us to a competitive total that we could defend,” he said.
“It’s kind of been our issues whenever we’ve played these games, we’ve just never been able to get a truly good score but runs on the board is always a benefit.
“It was good to see Jake back in the side and making a contribution, he’s been unavailable a fair bit this season but he’s capable of being a key part of our success.”
Tyrendarra will now face off against Dennington on Friday in the semi-final of the competition, with a win booking them for a spot in the final.
For their efforts on Sunday, the Darras are now assured of at last $2500 in prizemoney with a victory in the semi-final guaranteeing the club a minimum of $5,000 and the possibility of $15,000 should they go all the way.
City United d Macarthur
DESPITE being the highest scoring team in the Hamilton and District Cricket Association’s T20 competition, Macarthur was routed for less than 100, as Colac’s City United advanced through to the semi-finals.
The Demons won the toss at Davidson Oval and elected to bat first, but only Michael Brilley was able to make the most of his time in the middle as the wickets fell around him.
Brilley is currently hampered by an injury that doesn’t allow him to run with his usual swiftness, yet he was still able to score at run-a-ball pace and reached 41.
Sam Lambevski (17) was the only other player to reach double figures, but the stat that most damming is that he was the only Demon to hit the ball to the fence and that was only once.
A final tally of 95 was always going to be tough to defend, but City United galloped to victory without the loss of a wicket, as the openers posted the 96 required inside the 15th over.
