Hurricanes continue winning ways

THE Hamilton and District Women’s Cricket Association representative team continued its winning ways with a win against South East Zone at Island Park on Sunday.

The Hurricanes were coming off a strong performance against Warrnambool and carried that momentum into last weekend’s game, winning by 18 runs.

Hamilton lost the toss and was sent to the crease, as Claire Widdicombe and Paige Murrell opened the innings and the pair raced to 56 before Murrell was dismissed for 20.

Widdicombe continued to push on, falling just short of her half century, as she was dismissed for 45 with the Hurricanes in a strong position at 3-82.

Laura Addinsall (19), Jacqui Robinson (11), Sophie Taylor (16) and Eloise Millard (17) all scored important late innings runs, helping to push the team’s total up to 6-150 after 30 overs.

After a short break, the Hurricanes took to the field in hopes of defending the total.

It was a stunning catch from Murrell in slips which gave Eloise Millard the first wicket of the innings, and with South East Zone struggling at 2-20, it took a 50-run third-wicket partnership to keep the Hurricanes bowlers at bay.

The scoring rate was slower than it needed to be, and when Eloise Millard grabbed an impressive catch off her own bowling to dismiss Lydia Megaw for 36, it would continue to build the pressure on the visitors.

South East Zone passed 100, but it was tough going with the Hamilton bowlers putting the ball in good areas regularly.

Despite some dropped catches in the field, the Hurricanes were able to grab wickets at key times and eventually restricted their opponents to 5-132 after 30 overs.

Millard was the standout bowler, finishing the game with two wickets, while Ros Thatcher, Xar Christie-Hill and Robinson also chimed in to grab a wicket each for the home side.

The team has had a stunning summer and no doubt the players are building a strong foundation for future success going forward under coach, Louise Nield.
