Potter selected

GRAMPIANS cricketer, Grace Potter, is set to continue her development pathway, selected in the Victoria Country Under-16 Female Emerging Players Squad for season 2024-25.

The 20-girl squad has nearly half the squad coming from Geelong Cricket Club, with Potter joined by eight Cats teammates.

It is the second time the local has been selected in the squad after her selection last season.

Potter told The Spectator that knowing what was ahead helped make the process easier this year.

“It is kind of a bit different to last year, it was more nerve wracking then,” she said.

“This year I felt more confident.

“I reckon being in all these teams with these different coaches will help me learn so much.”

Potter found out about her selection in June and has already been training with the squad in Melbourne.

“It is not too bad, I am just training every second Wednesday at the MCG then Saturday sessions every second week,” she said.

“We do lots of batting, bowling and other skills, then we tend to do little classroom sessions about the mental aspect and leadership.

“Getting to understand more about how they want us to act before games and after games and before and after training.”

Having started pre-season already, Potter will again spread her games across the weekend, suiting up for Grampians in the Hamilton and District Women’s Cricket Association on Friday nights then playing for Geelong on Sundays.

With the season inching closer, Potter said she was excited to get another positive opportunity.

“I am pretty excited, there are less nerves because I know people and I know the process and I am not putting as much pressure on myself this year,” she said.

“Cricket Victoria recognise it is quite hard for country kids, so they have scheduled a session in Hamilton as well.”

Trial games will be played in the coming months against South Australia, with the Victoria Country squad for the national championships to be selected in September.

The final team will be announced in November, with the championships to be played in Ballarat in January.
