LOCAL teenage cricket sensation, Grace Potter has starred for Victoria Country in the Cricket Australia Under-16 Girls interstate series at Monivae College last week.
Teams representing Victoria Metro, Victoria Country, and South Australia converged in Hamilton to showcase their talents with an eye on progressing to higher honours.
Potter (who plays for Grampians in the Hamilton and District Women’s Cricket Association) has made her way along the Cricket Victoria pathway program over the course of the last few years, where she has risen to claim her place among the best players her age.
On Monday she batted at number six against Victoria Metro and scored a run-a-ball 26 to top score, as the Vic Country team amassed 6-111 from its 20 overs, before grabbed 2-28 from her four overs to be the star player in the game.
Potter was rested for the next game against South Australia, as Victoria Country looked to hand all squad members an equal amount of game time, but she was back in action on Wednesday morning in a one-day hit out against the Croweaters and again batted with confidence at six.
Later she opened the bowling against Vic Metro and dined out again on the city side, as she added another two wickets to her tally with only 23 runs coming from her six-over spell.
Potter already plays both here on Friday nights before suiting up for Geelong in the Cricket Victoria Premier Cricket competition on Sundays.
Victoria Country coach, Cassie Brock, was effusive when discussing the performances of both her team and of Potter over the course of the series.
“We are very happy with the way the team has performed,” Brock said.
“With a squad of 20 players we have been able to push players into various roles to test themselves, and I’ve been very happy with the results.
“The squad has been training at Junction Oval over the winter and they have come together as a team very quickly both on and off the field.
“Grace (Potter) has been very good with both bat and ball, and her strike rate when batting has been excellent.
“She has her all-round game in hand, whether she is batting, bowling or fielding.”
From here Cricket Victoria will select two squads (Country and Metro) for the national championships to be held in Ballarat in January 2025, where 13 players will be selected to represent each team.
With the performances that Potter has put forward over the week, the selectors will have taken note and will be firmly in focus for Victoria Country selection.
