Kangaroos eye off a third female football

THE Hamilton Kangaroos are eyeing off a third female football team in 2022, with the club hoping to field an Under-14 girls team in the Western Victoria Female Football League (WVFFL).

It comes as the club gears up to host two come and try days ahead of the 2022 season with Kangaroos female football director, Loretta Kearney, encouraging anyone who is interested in football to come down and have a go.

“We are looking at having come and try days for all age groups, we are hoping to get an Under-14 girls team up and going this year as well,” she said.

“We have kept it open for youth girls and senior women as well, we will have both coaches there and we just want to see as many faces there as possible.

“They said we need at least 12 for the juniors, because it is a new competition they just want to see what is out there.

“If we got 20, that would be fantastic.”

The club is hoping new faces get involved, helping to fill the void left by players who have been forced up into the senior team.

“We have lost minimum of six who won’t be playing in the youth girls, so we certainly need some replacements as well for that team,” she said.

“The players all love it, they love the physicality of it, the friendship and it is so different to anything they have ever played before.

“Generally they come off with smiles on their face and they are all just so happy to be out there and playing.”

With the WVFFL expanding to possibly include an Under-14 competition this year, the finer details are still being worked through, but should the team eventuate, Kearney said it would add another important element to the club.

“It makes the club whole in a way, because we have junior boys and then we will have junior girls, youth girls, senior men and women’s teams, so that is great.

“We are hoping the numbers will continue to grow and we are hoping we will get three teams up and running.”

The club is also encouraging players from last year to come to the sessions and catch up.

The sessions are scheduled for February 15 and 24 at Melville Oval from 6-7.30pm.

Training is also set to start soon after, as the WVFFL season draws closer.
