MORE than 60 years after Dave McCulloch hung up the boots with Carlton, his grandson, George, is chasing his own football dream.
Dave was a prominent player for Glenthompson before being recruited by the Blues ahead of the 1959 season with George plying his trade with the Geelong Falcons in the NAB League in search of his own AFL dream.
The 17-year-old did his pre-season at Glenthompson Recreation Reserve and the Geelong Grammar student returned to Glenthompson last week to visit family and told The Spectator his dream was to play at the elite level for the Blues.
“Carlton would be my first preference, dad obviously goes for them because of Grandpa as well,” he said.
George’s parents, Indi and Nick, both live in Glenthompson after moving away 20 years ago, before returning before the pandemic.
Both Indi and Nick played for Glenthompson in netball and football, with George’s connection to the region something he holds dear.
“Over summer, I did my whole pre-season at Glenthompson footy ground,” he said.
“It is a good break out here, it is a bit quiet and you get the oval to yourself.
McCulloch has had a mixed start to the NAB League season, playing wing and spending time in the forward line with the Falcons sitting fourth with two wins and a draw.
The 17-year-old said he was hoping for more consistent performances going forward.
“We have had a couple of close games to start the season,” he said.
“The first round I was happy with how I played, but the second game was hard because we got punished early in the game.”
McCulloch, who turns 18 on May 3, has always enjoyed football with his journey starting with Auskick.
“Barwon Heads is when we first played, then I played juniors all through there then have played with Geelong Grammar before playing at Ocean Grove last year and this year I am top age in the Geelong Falcons squad,” he said.
“From a young age I was inspired, it was cool to talk to friends about it (Dave’s career at Carlton).”
The Falcons faced the Greater Western Victoria Rebels on Thursday night with the Rebels falling short, 7.8 (50) to 15.7 (97).
Flynn Loader kicked three majors for the Rebels, while Tadhg Evans bagged four for the Falcons.
