Darras send Bloods tumbling

TYRENDARRA has inflicted another loss on Cavendish in the South West District Football Netball League (SWDFNL), as the Bloods tumbled to fifth on the premiership ladder with a performance that left much to be desired.

The Darras came out full of running at Yumbah Oval in the first half and ran the legs off the Cavendish players, as the goals mounted mainly through Thomas Hernan up forward who had a day out by bagging five majors.

He floated across the forward line all afternoon and took telling marks in every quarter, while also delivering quality ball to his other forwards in his best display of the season to date.

By half time, the home side was 50 points clear and it appeared that the match was all but over, with Cavendish having only a single major to their credit.

Cavendish Coach, Clinton Thomas, must have hit a nerve with his speech at the main break, as the Bloods came out a different side in the second half, playing a stronger brand of football to outscore the hosts, five goals to two, as the margin was reduced to 29 points and the visitors had a sniff of victory.

It wasn’t to be though, as Tyrendarra found its rhythm again, kicking five goals in the last term to win, 16.13 (109) to 8.10 (58).

Tyrendarra Coach, Matt Peters said his team’s forward efforts were improving, despite a lapse in the third term. “(Our) forward line worked well together and we are starting to get to know each other's games and stick to structures,” he said.

“(I was) happy with first half, (but) disappointed with our effort in third and we were a bit better in last.

“(Our) fitness needs a bit of work and we need four quarters, not two and a half.”

An injury to Dylan Jennings soured the win and is expected to miss a few weeks with a lower leg complaint.

Coleraine d. Branxholme-Wallacedale

COLERAINE made the road trip to Branxholme for a match they were expected to win comfortably and so it came to be, but the Saints took the match right up the ladder leaders for the first quarter, as the two teams traded goals in an entertaining start to the game at Branxholme Recreation Reserve.

The Saints trailed by only one straight kick when the quarter time siren blew (5.3 to 4.3) but from then on, the hosts could only manage another three majors for the rest of the game, as the Maroons stepped up and claimed a 19.12 (126) to 7.8 (50) victory.

The Saints came out after halftime and took the game up to the Maroons, who could only manage two majors for the third term, but unfortunately for the home side’s reward was just two behinds in reply.

Despite the loss, the Saints had positives with playing-coach, Leigh Ewing, leading by example with three goals, while Kieran Barker chipped in with three also.

Sam Brewer was again gaining votes from the judges but it was Sam Lambevski who took the honours as the best afield for Branxholme-Wallacedale, while Nathan Surkitt was the standout for Coleraine, named the Maroons’ best after kicking three goals.

Dartmoor d. Heathmere

DARTMOOR has notched up a third straight win after the Giants travelled to Heathmere and claimed an 83-point win.

The Giants burst out of the blocks in the opening quarter to bang home nine goals and open up a 44-point margin at quarter time, putting the hosts on the back foot from the outset.

When you are playing the reigning premiers it can be difficult to stop such a goal spree, but Heathmere did stop it and went on to win the final quarter, as the players fought the game out until the end.

The home side was 93-points adrift at three-quarter time and could have easily dropped their heads, but a four goals to one final term gave the Meres something to build on going into next week.

After eight goals last week, Christian Howlett backed it up with another five on Saturday, as he climbs the goal kickers ladder after only two matches.

He was not a one man show though, as Tyler Britten, Jayden Polaski and Dylan Gull all grabbed three apiece in the 20.14 (134) to 8.3 (51) win.

Heywood d. Westerns

HEYWOOD Recreation Reserve was alive with families on Saturday, as the club celebrated the launch of the “Deadly Choices” programme, an initiative between the club, Winda-Mara Aboriginal Corporation and Collingwood.

There was a big crowd in attendance too that not only watched their beloved Lions maul the Roos in the football, but also engaged with all the activities that were on offer throughout the day.

The Lions were not going to take it easy against Westerns, as a total of 12 players kicked goals for the afternoon but to show just how Heywood shared the ball around.

The home team had four players kick three goals apiece to hand the side the opportunity to score from all over the forward line.

Billy Bell, Troy Lovett, Jack Fadersen, Nick Johnstone, Jarod Donovan and Jakobe Walker were on song for the Lions, while Stephen O’Brien, David Alexander, Lachie Warburton, Sydney Ray, Taylor Murrell, Dylan Barden never gave up for the visitors.

Westerns failed to register a goal for the afternoon, losing 0.5 (5) to 23.20 (158).
