TYRENDARRA has earned redemption for their round one loss against Horsham after beating them on Sunday, 6.7 (43) to 1.2 (8), in their second clash for the season.
Tyrendarra came to play in the fourth round of the Western Victoria Female Football League with some new inclusions and added experience in their side setting them up for an impressive victory.
Horsham went into the match undermanned but put up an impressive fight across the four quarters; however, Tyrendarra’s pressure on the ball and improvement in the contest saw them run away with the win.
Tess Andrews had plenty of impact in her first game for the Darras booting two goals with Megan Latham, Kate Gleeson, Amie Nunn and Indiana Van Diesen also slotting one major for the day.
Tyrendarra will have one of their toughest match ups this week when they host Hamilton Kangaroos in round five on Sunday.
Portland Tigers show plenty of fight in tough loss
It was a tough day out for Portland’s under-18 football side in the Western Victoria Female Football League coming up against an impressive South Warrnambool side.
The Tigers travelled to South Warrnambool for their Sunday clash with the home side taking advantage of the wind early and carrying that momentum through to claim a 62-10 victory.
South Warrnambool dominated the first quarter posting five goals to push Portland on the back foot early.
The Tigers had the wind in the second quarter and had plenty of the ball inside 50 but struggled to convert – forcing them further behind on the scoreboard heading into half time.
It was a positive second half for Portland where they managed to put some pressure on South Warrnambool’s fast ball movement to level out the scoreboard impact.
Despite the lift from the away side South Warrnambool maintained their composure to run home with the win.
Portland coach Rose Wombwell said South Warrnambool was all class but her team was impressive in their second quarter response.
“South were very impressive; you can tell they’ve played together for a while now and they were linking the ball up really well,” she said.
“They managed to link four to five possessions whereas we’re still at the point where we’re linking about two to three possessions.
“They slammed on five or six goals in the first quarter with the wind but to our credit the girls managed to keep them to just 60 for the game so I was really happy with that.”
Best on ground for the day went to Hamilton-based player Jess Rentsch with Maddison Cotten, Tarryn Hall, Teyah Evans and Airlie Aldridge also named among the best players.
“Early in the game we had to restructure our backline so we swung Jenna Bristow down there as a stabiliser and she was great,” Wombwell said.
“Tarryn Hall is another one who has been impressive – it’s her first season playing and she improves every week with her attack on the ball.
“We’ve got about 10 girls who are playing their first season so it’s their third or fourth game ever so it’s just about building up skills and game awareness.
“I couldn’t be prouder of how they’re going.”
Portland have the bye this week before facing Horsham again in round six.
