Tough day out for Kangaroos against Demons

THE Hamilton Kangaroos suffered their second loss of the Western Victoria Female Football League season, going down to Horsham Demons by 20 points at Melville Oval on Sunday.

The home team kicked the only goal of the first quarter to lead by six points at the first break, but the visitors bounced back after quarter time and kicked two goals while keeping the blue and white goalless to lead by four points at half time.

A three goals to two third term pushed the margin out to 12 points at the final break with the Kangaroos unable to reel in the deficit in the final term to lose, 4.3 (27) to 7.5 (47).

Sophie Herrmann fractured her shoulder and will miss the rest of the season in what was a tough day for the home side.

Kangaroos coach, Pat Sherlock said it was a good game to learn from, despite the team missing out on the win.

“The message is just to be more competitive and have more attack and intensity on the ball,” he said.

“We have worked on ball movement through the middle of the ground to compensate for the wind, and that is what I mean about playing more like footballers.”

Sherlock said there were definitely some things to highlight going forward and will lead to move improvement within the group.

“A few of the girls played their role really well and at times sometimes you get stuck in the contest and knowing when you can influence the play,” he said.

“We started off well, then their forwards started to move the ball a bit quicker and we had to work hard.

“It is good to have competitive games, last week against Tyrendarra we were on the right end of it and this time around we weren’t.

“There were definitely some positives to come out of it and we will learn from the loss.”
