HAMILTON KANGAROOS’ women’s football team has recorded a tough victory against Tyrendarra at Melville Oval on Friday night in round eleven of the Western Victoria Female Football League.
The team didn’t just have to battle the Darras, but also the heavy dew that enveloped the playing surface.
With the oval lights shining brightly, the foggy conditions were made more obvious, as the players took to the field with both teams needing victory to shore up respective ladder positions.
As the dew settled over the ground, the players found it difficult to handle the wet ball and the game became a scrappy affair with scoring at a premium.
Each side registered a major in the first quarter, but the visitors added a behind as well to take that margin into the first break.
The second term again saw scoring tough, as the back lines of both teams repelled the ball back up field time after time, but both sides also registered another goal apiece to have Hamilton kangaroos ahead by three points at the main break.
The third quarter was a defender’s dream, as neither side recorded a goal, but the Kangaroos managed to kick three behinds to open the largest lead of the night, six points, going into the last break.
With it all to play for in the last term, Tyrendarra had more scoring opportunities than their hosts, but they failed to capitalise on those opportunities as they added two-behinds to the goal they scored while the Kangaroos watched on as Emily Pitts marked, ran on and goaled to register a tough four-point victory, 3.7 (25)-3.3 (21).
Chloe Smith and Hinemoa Biddle-Maitland excelled in the conditions for the home side, while Leah Mirtschin, Emma Lynch, Caroline McGrath and Pitts added great contributions around the ground.
Nicola Clark battled hard all night along with Lauren Millard, Sarah Pedrazzi, Brooke Stiles, Ashleigh Boyer and Megan Latham as the Darras fell just short.
