THE Hamilton Kangaroos senior women’s football team is out to make history on Sunday.

The team will face-off against Horsham Demons at Reid Oval in pursuit of the club’s first senior premiership.

Horsham has defeated Hamilton in each of the three previous Western Victoria Female Football League (WVFFL) encounters, with a 20-point loss in round six followed by a 34-point defeat in round 10.

A six-point margin in the semi-final gives the blue and white confidence they can claim victory on Sunday.

Kangaroos coach, Pat Sherlock

“I have said to the girls they have already passed my expectations for what I thought we could achieve today.

“We have been aiming for this for a little while, aiming to experience a grand final with a bit of media and things like that.

“I think it will be good for the town and good for women’s footy if we did get through to the grand final and we have done that.”

Sherlock said the team had done the work required and was expecting a good showing from his team.

“Our preparation has been really good,” he said.

“I have been really happy with our lead-up to this, we have ticked all the boxes we have needed to now and am pretty excited for the game coming up.”

Additional experience at Reid Oval should also help the Roos in their quest for premiership glory.

“We have played there twice there and obviously got the wins there a couple times, the ground probably suits us a bit with how we want to run the ball,” Sherlock said.

“The other advantage is Horsham has to travel two and a half hours to get there.”

Bec Malseed has overseen the growth of the team during the season and the skipper is excited to get out there on Sunday.

“It is an amazing feeling, the girls have gelled so well together and the team is pumped and ready to go,” she said.

“I am just rapt to lead them out as captain.

“I think it is going to be a tough nail-biter, we were level with them at three quarter time in the semi-final, so I don’t expect anything less.”

With the temperature also set to warm up over the weekend, the day is set to be the ultimate spectacle for the girls; a fitting finale for the season.

Malseed said the forecast will also aid the team to play their preferred style of football.

“I think mother nature is definitely going to turn it on for us,” she said.

“I will just try and remind the girls it is important just to play our game and do what we know we need to do, don’t overthink things and don’t put pressure on ourselves too much.

Despite earlier season losses to the Demons, the Roos go into the decider full of confidence.

Malseed said a positive outlook was always important going into games.

“We can do this, there is no doubt about that,” she said.

“You don’t want to walk off the field saying I wish I did more, we just need to give our all and it is just going to be the best team on the day.”

The support from others was also acknowledged, with Malseed hoping to repay the investment and hopefully lift the premiership cup tomorrow afternoon.

“We as a club need to commend the senior and reserves team, we have been able to train with them on a Tuesday night and it is a big culture shift,” she said.

“We should be embracing that and I think that has lifted our skillset.

“A huge thank you to the club, Pat Sherlock, Loretta Kearney, Brendan Huf, they have all given their time and we want to do them proud.”
