Fanning finishes second in reserves votes

TATYOON’S Joe Thomson was a runaway victor in the Mininera and District Football League reserves football vote count, polling 25 votes to win ahead of runner-up, Dave Fanning.

Fanning polled 18 votes in the DJ Martin Medal with the Rams playing-coach collecting his first top two finish.

“I didn’t expect it at all, I have never won an award like this before,” he said.

“I thought I had a few good games and I was really happy with it.

“I played 10 or 12 games and the body held up well.

“I played most of the season in the midfield and forward.”

Fanning’s strong form also helped him set a strong example for the rest of his team, and with the side preparing for Saturday’s grand final, Fanning will attract plenty of attention after his runner-up finish.

Under-16.5

TATYOON’S Noah Barbary topped the Under-16.5 votes, finishing the season with 27 to hold off Caramut’s Tom O’Sullivan by five.

The Hawks midfielder was “very happy” with his season despite travelling more than most.

“I came from Sealake and now I am boarding in Ballarat,” he said.

“I played alright, it was my first season at the club, but it hasn’t been too bad.

“I had three mates coming with me from Ballarat.”

Other awards

TATYOON collected the Champion Club award, while Hawkesdale-Macarthur’s Peter Gordon was named club umpire of the year.

Glenthompson-Dunkeld’s Matthew Lowe was acknowledged as Under-12 coach/Under-16.5 coach/administrator of the year.

The leading goal kickers were also presented with their awards with Lismore-Derrinallum’s Michael Lockyer breaking the ton to win the senior award with 101.

Damien Logan topped the reserves tally with 52 for Glenthompson-Dunkeld, while Noah Cameron booted 38 goals for Penshurst to win the Under-16.5 award.

With grand final day scheduled for Saturday at Glenthompson, there is one more big day to get through to cap off the first full season since 2019.
