RAMS AT HOME FOR DECIDER

IT is all or nothing, as Glenthompson-Dunkeld faces off against Tatyoon in today’s Mininera and District Football League (MDFL) reserves season decider at Glenthompson.

The Rams finished third, but won through to the grand final against minor premier, Tatyoon.

Glenthompson-Dunkeld captain, Russell Macgugan said he as confident his team would be up for the contest.

“It is a really good feeling,” he said.

“All year we have sort of underrated ourselves a bit and we have always played as the underdog, and it is amazing how that sort of attitude has helped us win games.

“We are definitely going into the game as the underdog and Tatyoon really played good footy and flogged us in the second semi-final.

“We have worked on a few things and hopefully got a bit more fitness back and at close to full strength, we will give it a red-hot crack.”

In a rare occasion, a grand final team will play on their home ground, adding to the Rams’ prospects of an upset win.

Macgugan is hoping for a vocal home ground crowd, as Glenthompson-Dunkeld takes to the field for its first reserves grand final since 2017.

“It is a big factor, we will thrive on the local ground and home ground advantage,” he said.

“It is a touch smaller than some of the grounds we have played finals on, so I think it will suit us a bit more.

“We are expecting a bit more of a scrappy game, but it depends how much (rain) comes on the day

“It will certainly slow the game down which will help us in some aspects.”

The midfield battle will also be critical with the smaller ground likely to be a bit softer after recent rainfall.

Finals are usually a more contested style of play and the Rams will need to adjust after losing the onball battle to Tatyoon a fortnight ago.

“It is a massive factor and it is probably where we lost the game to them last time,” Macgugan said.

“We really need to work hard on the onball scenario and get our rotations right.”

One thing which will play into the Rams’ favour is Damien Logan, who won the reserves league goal kicking award.

Macgugan said Logan will need more assistance to have an impact on the game today.

“Full credit to him, he is an asset for our team,” he said.

“He got covered pretty well a couple of weeks ago, so we will try and cover that with a few different options this time around.”

The game will get underway at 11.45am.

Tatyoon and Ararat Eagles will face-off in the senior decider at 2.30pm.
