Rebels group assessed during local session

THE Greater Western Victoria Rebels pre-season is officially underway with a group of south-west squad members undergoing testing in Hamilton last week.

Rebels head of coaching and talent, David Loader, was also on hand for the session, which was designed as an introduction to the pre-season program.

Loader said it was good to get down to Hamilton and assess the south-west group.

“We get an opportunity to come down and have a look, it is the first night for education and expectations and what the program will look like,” he said.

“There is about 123 people in squads at the moment, we will probably end up with a list of about 35.

“With the Under-16s involved, if we have one or two or three in the state side, they are encouraged to come in; we picked up five of those types last year, which bolsters the numbers up a bit.

“There is an opportunity for everyone, everyone is untapped right now.”

With the Rebels coming off a successful AFL Draft, with three players picked up last month, Loader was bullish about what the current group can achieve in 2023.

“Certainly in the last couple of years, I came back in 2020, it is a really talented area,” he said.

“You build your team and game plan around what we have, we are at the starting point again and we will see how we go.

“They are training two nights a week up to Christmas, then will be given an extensive program over the break before we are back into it late January.

“As long as the kids are continuing to work and get better, they will go a long way with their footy.

“I am just really looking forward to what this coming year will bring.”
