PORTLAND’S under-18 youth girls team had a strong tussle in their second match for the Western Victoria Female Football League season against Cavendish, going down by just 14 points on Sunday.
It was an impressive scoring effort from both sides with the Tigers converting strongly but couldn’t outscore Cavendish, 6.11 (47) to 5.3 (33).
The first quarter remained close with both sides kicking just one goal before Cavendish found their form in the second term and hitting four scoring shots, but just one going through as a major.
Portland lifted in the third term with their ability to transition the ball down field a highlight, but Cavendish continued to charge ahead booting two goals to Portland’s one.
It was all about the Tigers in the last quarter with the side finding plenty of space and Airlie Aldridge offering a solid target in their forward half.
Portland piled on three goals but it wasn’t enough to close the gap on the scoreboard seeing them go down by 14.
Vice-captain Saige Bell was awarded best on ground for her efforts through the middle while Aleesha Whitehead, Marnie Mueller, Aldridge, Poppy Lane and Chloe Reynolds were also impressive on the day.
Darras dominate against Stawell
In the women’s competition Tyrendarra came up against an outnumbered Stawell line up to secure their second win of the season, 16.23 (119) to 0.1 (1).
It was all the Darras way from the get-go on Sunday with Stawell struggling to get numbers to the contest and Tyrendarra dominating in stoppages.
Despite some inaccuracy in front of the posts Tyrendarra managed to pile on 5.4 (34) in the first quarter and didn’t let up there.
Some brilliance in the forward line from Meg Schultz and Ieesha Kelly-O’Brien gave the Darras a big leg up with Ebony Stiles and Lashay Blurton dominating through the middle of the ground.
The scoring dominance continued with Ash Boyer’s ruck work making it easy for the Darras to extract the ball from the centre.
Stiles was awarded best on ground for the day while Boyer, Blurton, Schultz, Lauren Millard and Kylie Nunn were also named in the top players.
