Stone steps up

JUNIOR basketballer Maddi-Lyse Stone is continuing to build her basketball resume after attending Basketball Victoria’s Country Metro Challenge in Bendigo on Sunday and Monday.

The challenge is an opportunity for top age under-14 players who are selected to advance their skills and understanding on the court by coming up against some tough opposition under the guidance of Basketball Victoria coaches.

Stone was selected for her performance in a try out day after being identified from the Regional Basketball Academy program and said it was a great experience where they were put to the test in a semi-elite environment.

“I was in team Bushrangers, and it was a pretty busy two days,” she said.

“We had training sessions in the morning then the boys would play and then we would play after them.

“We had two games on both days, so our all up, but the whole tournament was about development not so much winning.”

The ability to put skills and plays they worked on in training sessions into practice at the games was a huge focus across the two days.

“They want us to be international learners, so they’ll show us something once, and then they want us to be able to execute it straight away and if we don’t they put us under pressure,” she said.

“There was a lot to learn, we had about an hour to learn all of these new plays and then had to use them in the games.

“It was so good, and it’ll be really useful for me moving forward.”

Stone will now continue with the local basketball Academy alongside 10 other Portland basketballers as they vie for selection into the next phase of representative basketball.
