Betts claims victory in special ‘Big V’ game

THE VAFA Women’s ‘Big V’ team had a convincing 63-point win over Perth Football League, 77-14 with Sarah Betts getting to hold the cup aloft at the end of the game.

Betts is the granddaughter of the late Val and Reg Murray who were well known in the local area with Reg representing the Hamilton Imperials and Port Melbourne.

Just like her grandfather, she is a force to be reckoned and led the side in the ruck all day to give her midfielders first use of the ball.

Betts said it was a “special” day to represent the ‘Big V’ and follow in her grandfather’s footsteps.

“I never got to meet him, but I feel like I’m quite like him, to be able to play ruck which was his position felt very special to me,” Betts told The Spectator.

“It was a great game … it was a great opportunity for me, and I was lucky I had played with a few girls in the side, so we all knew how each other played.”

The first quarter was full of nerves and there was very little difference between the two teams, but from then on, the Vics built some momentum and looked more composed as they played together well as a team.

One particular passage of play featured three of the St Kevin’s players with a strong tap out from the centre from Sarah Betts to Vic Captain, Bree Doyle who kicked to Molly Simpson who kicked a goal as a result.
