TYRENDARRA will head into a do-or-die clash tomorrow against Hamilton Kangaroos in the Western Victoria Female Football League elimination final in Cavendish.
Since their inaugural season last year, it is the second year in a row, the side has made the elimination final, with their hopes in 2022 dashed by South Warrnambool.
This year, the side managed to record some more wins during the home and away season but have been pushing for form late in the year.
The last time they faced Hamilton, Tyrendarra suffered a 4.2 (26) to 1.3 (9) loss, a big turnaround from the Darras round two win against the Roos, 7.7 (49) to 0.2 (2).
With each side having one win apiece coming in, Tyrendarra will be hopeful they can win their first final since joining the competition.
“We beat them early in the season and then they got on top of us last time, so it’ll be an interesting game,” Tyrendarra coach Glenn Kane said.
“For us, our work in the contest is as good as any and our ability to get our hand on ball is a big strength so we want to stick at that.
“We have to be mindful of their outside run and ability to convert when they get the ball down there.”
The Darras finished the season on a tough loss to premiership favourites South Warrnambool who have dominated the year, heading into finals undefeated.
While it was a big margin Kane said it reflected the growth of the league.
“The whole competition has improved so much even since last year,” he said.
“It stood out a lot against South, you could tell there was a lot more players who had grown up with footy and trained like footballers for a long time.”
Tyrendarra is hoping to welcome back assistant coach and captain Nicola Clark to the field after she has missed the past few games due to injury.
In order to get the win on Sunday Kane said the side would have to pressure across the ground and be wary of Hamilton’s run.
“We have to be mindful of their transition, they’re really quick off the mark so we’ll have to make sure we’re getting in and supporting our defenders,” he said.
“Especially our forwards, it’ll be really important that they’re applying pressure when Hamilton try and get the ball out.
“And we have to keep winning contested ball and keep that pressure on.
“No matter what though I am very sure the whole team is going to give it their best shot and put everything on the line.”
• In the other final Horsham will face the undefeated South Warrnambool in Cavendish on Sunday with the winner heading into the grand final while the loser will face the winner of Hamilton and Tyrendarra.
In the under-18 competition, it will be a replica of the women’s qualifying clash with Horsham and South Warrnambool battling it out for a spot in the grand final.
The under-18 elimination final will be played at South Warrnambool’s home ground between Terang-Mortlake and Warrnambool.
