Eagles out to balance ledger with win

HAWKESDALE-MACARTHUR will be out to finish the Mininera and District Football League season on a winning note, travelling to Mininera Recreation Reserve for a final round clash against SMW Rovers today.

The Eagles six seventh, two games out of the top five, while the Bulldogs are 10th, setting up an intriguing contest to finish 2023 for both sides.

Hawkesdale-Macarthur co-coach, Josh Reichman said a strong finish to the season would help build momentum into 2024.

“We just want to finish the year strong,” he said.

“If we can have a good win, then we will finish 8-8 which is a good ledger to finish on and gives us a bit of momentum going into next year.

“You never have the same group, there is always some changes, so it will just be about enjoying the group we have got, and although we didn’t make finals, it has been a pretty good year.”

In recent weeks there have been some opportunities to bring in some younger players into the team, as the club casts an eye towards next year.

Reichman said finding positions for them has been a priority and working through where they play their best footy will continue this afternoon.

“We have had some younger kids come in the last month which has been really pleasing and made things pretty exciting,” he said.

“We have been pretty good at flicking the magnets around this year, we have never had too much height though, so those kind of games we were throwing them around a bit more than usual, and some of the younger kids that have come in have given us a bit of height and speed.

“We have been struck with a few injuries, James North I expect to play (after missing last week) and Luke Gow did his ankle last week and played, but he might not play this week.”

Other games

GLENTHOMPSON-DUNKELD will host Moyston-Willaura in a pre-finals tune-up in what should be a comfortable win for the Rams at Glenthompson Recreation Reserve.

The Pumas are coming off a round 15 thumping and while the home side doesn’t have the quality of the Magpies, it is likely to be another long day for the visitors.

Penshurst will be at home for a round 16 clash against Caramut, with the fourth-placed Bombers hoping to build momentum ahead of the first week of finals.

It will be a top two clash when the Tigers and Hawks face-off at Woorndoo Recreation Reserve.

The positions are all but locked in, with Tatyoon sitting a game and 150% clear on top, while Woorndoo-Mortlake is a game clear of Wickliffe-Lake Bolac, and those two will face-off in the qualifying final, but today’s results will simply determine which side will have the home changerooms.

Great Western will finish its 2023 campaign at home in a clash against Wickliffe-Lake Bolac.

The Magpies are in winning form, and the third-placed side will be ruthless ahead of next week’s qualifying final.

Lismore-Derrinallum and Ararat Eagles will conclude the round when they face-off at Lismore Recreation Reserve.
