THE Hamilton Kangaroos extended their perfect Western Victoria Female Football League (WVFFL) record with a nine-point win against Horsham Demons at Pedrina Park on Saturday.
The start of the senior women’s clash was a defensive encounter, with just three behinds scored in the first term, before the Kangaroos piled on two majors in the second quarter to go into half time leading by 13 points.
Horsham responded after half time with three goals in the third term to go into the final quarter with a two-point advantage.
The home side rallied, scoring the only goal of the final term to win, 4.7 (31) to 3.4 (22).
Mimi Chun, Teyah Evans, Chloe Finnigan and Sophie Rentsch were the goal scorers, while Chun was named the Roos’ best, along with Finnigan, Rentsch and Leah Mirtschin.
Cavendish had another tough outing, going down to Tyrendarra by 122 points at Cavendish Recreation Reserve.
The Bloods are starting from a fair way back, compared to many of the teams in the competition, and it is showing in the first few rounds, with the red and white unable to hit the scoreboard.
Tyrendarra kicked eight goals in the third quarter, finishing with a 18.14 (122) to 0.0 (0) win.
Laura Downes, Abby Thompson, Hannah Nicholls, Bella Meulendyks, Abbey Wilson and Sarah Craig were named Cavendish’s best players in the round two clash.
Both local sides will face-off in round three with Hamilton hosting Cavendish at Pedrina Park on Sunday at 12.30pm.
Juniors
CAVENDISH got on the winners list for the first time this season with a 46-point win against Portland in the Under-18 clash.
The Bloods were at home and made use of the conditions to kick the only goal of the first quarter, before extending the margin out to 15 points by half time.
A six goals to one second half saw the Bloods run away comfortable 9.6 (60) to 2.2 (14) winners.
Ruby Packman finished with three goals, while Giselle Salas chipped in with two majors for the winners.
Ava Murrihy, Leayla Pohl, Milly Thomas, Ruby Cleaver, Matilda Brook and Drew Garratt were standouts for Cavendish.
Hamilton Kangaroos’ Under-15 clash against North Warrnambool Eagles was a tough outing at Pedrina Park, with the blue and white losing by 102 points.
It was a struggle from the outset for the home side, as the visitors scored four goals in the first quarter, before stretching the margin out to 45 points at the main break.
A strong second half from the Eagles saw the Roos fall short in the end, 1.0 (6) to 17.6 (108).
Lola Perriman was the lone goal scorer for Hamilton, while Ella Bester, Mikela Pohl, Taya Sherlock, Bridget Sherlock, Mhairi McDonald and Perriman were named the team’s best players.
