Coleraine leads the way in Under-17s

COLERAINE has solidified its position as the team to beat in the Greater South West Junior Football League (GSWJFL) after a convincing win against Heathmere in the Under-17 competition.

It was a huge victory for the travelling team, which defeated an undermanned Heathmere side, 18.19 (127) to 1.2 (8).

Coleraine is yet to lose a match with its strength apparent on Saturday when the Maroons developed an early lead of 48 points while keeping Heathmere scoreless in the first term.

The Meres managed to create more opportunities in the second term and hit the scoreboard for the first time, while limiting Coleraine’s scoreboard attack.

Despite Heathmere’s efforts, Coleraine was too strong and ran away with the lead to secure the 119-point win.

Coleraine’s James Plunkett was named best on ground, followed by Rhyan Menzel, Jackson Templeton, Daylin Plush, Hunter Plush and Jordan Walter.

Heathmere’s best player for the day was Samuel Fidge, while Seb Harvey, Bodhi Keddie, Patrick McGennisken, Tadhg McMillan and Alex Jacobson were also named in the best.

A second half onslaught saw Hamilton Kangaroos overpower Tyrendarra on Sunday, 15.18 (108) to 6.3 (39).

It was an evenly matched first half with the Kangaroos’ wayward kicking keeping the Darras within striking distance on the scoreboard.

Hamilton held a comfortable lead by the break, but blew the margin out in the third term.

Both sides hit the scoreboard in the fourth quarter, but Hamilton outplayed its opponents to earn the win.

Best player for the winners was Joseph Lehmann, while Kaden Wilson was awarded Tyrendarra’s best.

Under-14

THERE were some close contests in the Under-14 competition across Saturday and Sunday with Heathmere edging out Coleraine in a Super Saturday clash, 9.5 (59) to 7.1 (43).

A strong first half got the Meres over the line with Coleraine closing the margin in the second half, but Heathmere held on to claim the win.

Artie Harvey was named Heathmere’s best player, while Jono Stewart was a standout contributor for Coleraine.

Hamilton Kangaroos Blue clinched an eight-point victory against Tyrendarra on Sunday, 3.10 (28) to 3.2 (20).

Tyrendarra dominated the first half of the match and pushed out to a five-point lead ahead of the long break.

Despite their impressive efforts early, the Darras didn’t post another score for match, while Hamilton found plenty of scoring opportunities and hit the lead despite some inaccuracies.

Xavier White was named Hamilton’s best player, while Phoenix Stewart was awarded Tyrendarra’s best on ground honour

Heywood Under-14s claimed a confident win against Hamilton Orange, 9.2 (56) to 5.4 (34).

It was a last quarter onslaught from the Lions which got them across the line after Hamilton led all game.

Jensen Moore took out the best on ground award for Heywood, while Archie Adams was named Hamilton’s best.

Cavendish earned a confident win against Portland Tigers on Saturday, 13.5 (83) to 2.5 (17).
