Resounding victories in junior football

THE Greater South West Junior Football League season got underway on Saturday, with eight games taking the field across three age brackets.

The under-11s mixed division hit the field early Saturday morning, with teams from Heathmere, Branxholme-Wallacedale, Cavendish, Coleraine, Portland and Tyrendarra clashing in non-scoring matches.

Under-17s

Tyrendarra proved far too strong for Portland Tigers in their matchup at Hanlon Park, taking home a 17.21 (123) to 0.1 (1) victory.

The Darras got a very even spread of scoring, with six players registering multiple goals for them, as the side really found their groove in the final term, booting seven goals.

Kade Wilson, Marcus Willey, Jack Lipscombe, Jarvis Morton, Jake Morton and Nick Peters were best for the Darras.

Despite the scoreline, Portland still saw some solid performances from its group, with Kowen Goodwin, Tighe Warburton, Zack Carter, Will McIntyre, Perry Maas-Geesteranus and Toby Ralph named in their best.

It was a similar story in Cavendish’s victory over Coleraine, with the Bloods winning 19.4 (118) to 0.3 (3).

Joshua Miller, Karatau Keightley, Hugo Hedley, Ned Wareham, Stormy Manaia and Tamati Manaia were best for the victors, while Kaleb McKelvie, Jaydn Walter, Clay Fitzgerald, Zander Beardsell, Hunter Kendall and Alex Gunning fought hard for the Maroons.

Under-14s

The Darras were too much for the Tigers in the under-14s as well, running out 20.16 (136) to 1.2 (8) winners.

The Darras had five players kick multiple goals, with Noah Prevett leading the way with six, while Hunter Rowe added four.

Prevett, along with Brad Morton, Felix Gill, Jack Matley, Riley Hameka and Otis Porter, were in Tyrendarra’s best, while Jaskirat Somal, Ajay Sonti and Jett Newton were best for Portland.

Heathmere got the better of league newcomers Branxholme-Wallacedale, winning their matchup 12.4 (76) to 6.5 (41) at home on Saturday morning.

The Meres booted three goals in each quarter to hold on to a comfortable lead throughout, with the Saints only finding their feet in the second half.

Charlie Arnold, Judd Carter, Ryan Dark, Elliot Munday, Banjo Taylor and Cohan Fleming were best for Heathmere, with the Saints’ best players not to hand.

Coleraine were a class above Cavendish in their fixture, claiming victory 10.7 (67) to 4.4 (28).

A six goals to one first half proved the difference in this one, as the Bloods only really found their feet in the final term, booting three goals to one in that quarter.

Jessy Walter, Connor Lambert, Darcy Eats, Chase Tosetti, Marianna Novikov and William Templeton were best for the Maroons, while Harrison Blohm, Isaac Spring, Hamish Button, Georgie Harris, Jordie Alexander and Rhydian Reiersen produced quality efforts for Cavendish.
