THE Hamilton Kangaroos have had an international flavour in recent weeks with Yoan Lannemayou joining the club.
The Frenchman, who is working on a local farm as part of a three-month stint in Australia, decided to embrace Aussie Rules and join the blue and white for the remainder of the season.
The 20-year-old made his debut in the Kangaroos reserves last month and said it was a good way of meeting new people.
“I just wanted to do sports in Australia and I wanted to try Australian football,” he said.
“I watched three or four games here on television before I started playing.”
Lannemayou is studying agronomy back in France and as part of the course was required to travel to an English-speaking country for three months.
It is his first time in Australia and said he has enjoyed the past month in the region.
“I have had a lot of fun, everyone has been really nice with me,” he said.
“Learning the sport is good.
“They (family) think it is good to play a new sport.”
The 20-year-old studies in Toulouse, but hails from the south-west of France, and has used his rugby background during his Aussie Rules football tenure.
“It is a bit hard but I try to understand the rules and tactics,” he said.
“I have played rugby since I was six years old.”
Lannemayou also celebrated his birthday last month, and with the Kangaroos chasing a spot in the reserves top five, he may yet have another milestone to celebrate before returning home.
