Open clash ends in thriller draw

THE Hamilton Kangaroos have fought out a high-scoring draw in their Hampden Football Netball League (HFNL) round 17 Open netball clash against Camperdown on Saturday.

The two teams put on a shooting clinic at Melville Oval, combined for 34 goals in the first quarter with neither team able to edge ahead at the first break.

It was a sign of things to come, as the lead swung back and forth with the Magpies ahead by a single goal at the main break.

The blue and white held a two-goal lead at the last change, but fell behind at times in the last quarter.

The home team fought back to level the scores with the scoreboard showing 61-61 when the final whistle blew.

Kelsey Lewis top-scored for the Roos with 33, while Hayley Sherlock put up 28 goals in support.

Kellie Sommerville was the home team’s standout, spending much of the game in goal defence.

Kangaroos coach, Nat O’Dea said it was a fast-paced game from the outset from both teams.

“It was definitely a shootout, the defenders were taken out of the game,” she said.

“Neither side was able to get any defensive rebound, Camperdown’s goalies were absolutely amazing for 16-year-old girls.

“Our goalies also really stood up, Hayley and Kelsey shot the best they had all year but they had to.”

With finals out of reach for both teams, it was a chance to try something different with O’Dea moving Sommerville into goal defence in the second quarter, with Clare Crawford moving into centre.

“I weighed it (slowing the game down) up during the second quarter, I thought I needed to change the defensive line-up,” O’Dea said.

“I put Kellie into goal defence, and I think Clare and Kellie embraced the change.

“It was really entertaining; the standard was super high and the speed was quick for the end of the season and I think the draw was fitting for both teams.”
