HAMILTON KANGAROOS suffered its second loss of the season on Saturday, going down to Hampden Football Netball League powerhouse, Koroit, 42-46 at Victoria Park.
The result means that the Kangaroos have lost two games and drawn another game against the teams that finished on the top three rungs of the ladder last season.
Clare Crawford put the GA bib on again, as Hayley Sherlock failed to recover from a calf injury for the game, and just as she did last round, she and Danielle Van Kalken formed a strong goaler combination in goals.
The first term saw the teams swap goal for goal with the Kangaroos grabbing a single goal margin at the sound of the first buzzer, but Koroit returned to the court determined to impose itself on the Roos.
The second term saw the Saints swoop in defence to create turnover ball and switch the play to the other end of the court where Nell Mitchell and Molly McKinnon waited in the goal circle to make the visitors pay for their mistakes.
At the long break the Saints led by five goals which was extended to eight goals by the last change of ends, and the Roos had to climb a mountain if they were to claim the victory.
It wasn’t to be, even though the Roos had a 13-9 last quarter, falling shy by four goals, but Van Kalken, Crawford and Emma Sommerville all played well.
Division 1
THE Hamilton Kangaroos division one team went down for only the second time in the opening seven rounds of the season, as Koroit registered a 53-26 victory.
The reigning premier made a statement to the rest of the competition by winning all four quarters of the game, as it stopped the Kangaroos from gaining a foothold in the match by creating turnover ball consistently.
Jess Crane, Rhianne Lewis and Tahlia Ross were judged as being the best for the visitors, but the squad will have to regroup in time for Terang-Mortlake at home next week.
Division 2
A 10-goal second-quarter blitz from Koroit, stopped Hamilton Kangaroos from winning away from home and maintaining its undefeated record for 2023.
After taking a four-goal lead into the first break, Hamilton was swamped by the hosts in the second stanza and from there the Saints were never headed.
Bailey Ryan, Caitlin Urquhart and Tamara Milne did their best to keep the undefeated run alive, but in the end the Saints were too strong.
Division 3
HAMILTON Kangaroos division three team was the only senior side to maintain its form as the squad remained undefeated after the first seven rounds.
The 45-18 scoreline was fair reflection of how dominant the Kangaroos were across all four quarters, as Mimi Chun and Saskia Gould starred for the visitors.
17-and-Under
IT was a tough day for the Hamilton Kangaroos 17-and-Under team, as it went down to the undefeated ladder leaders Koroit, 50-35.
The visitors didn’t manage to win a quarter as Koroit took control of the match from the first term despite the best efforts of Ella Sevior and Mimi Chun who were judged as being best for Hamilton.
15-and-Under
HAMILTON Kangaroos hung on to the fifth rung on the 15-and-Under premiership ladder after going down to Koroit, 19-36, as the home side blitzed its opposition in the first half.
The Kangaroos returned to the court for the second half, determined to take the game to the Saints, as Scarlett Hintum, Saskia Gould and Lily Raymond did their best for the Kangaroos.
13-and-Under
HAMILTON Kangaroos didn’t start its day on the right foot, as the club’s 13-and-Under team went down to Koroit, 18-26. This was always going to be a big game, as it featured the two undefeated teams in the competition, as Maddox Ryan, Ruby Spong and Molly Sevior were the pick of the youngest Roos, who all gave their all in what may have been a prelude to the grand final.
